Hooked is the raucous autobiography that follows the life of Jim Baugh from childhood through a series of twists and turns, or should I say nautical tacks left and right, to the present as the producer of and director of Outdoors with Jim Baugh, Ski East, Classic Fishing. Fishing Virginia and, RV Times.

The book opens on ‘A’ dock on the ‘rivah’ in Gloucester,Virginia where Jim spent weekends away from his home near Charlottesville. Jim, the son of a prominent judge, spent his youth boating, fishing and crabbing and learning about life around the Chesapeake Bay. According to the Book of Dead, twin sycamores stand at the eastern gate of Heaven. Throughout Jim’s life heaven has been on the eastern shore of Virginia guarded by a majestic old Magnolia tree. The old Magnolia serves as a symbol of life and as Jim’s touchstone, a broad leafed inspiration Jim taps from time to time to renew his faith. Over the course of the book Jim often returns to ‘A’ dock in his mind to touch base spiritually with the old Magnolia tree which remains a constant reminder of his youth and therapeutic stroll back to the days of ‘A’ dock whenever his soul needs to recharge.

The book chronicles how Jim’s love of magic and music have led him from performing close-up street magic at Kings Dominion and Bush Gardens to producing a world class Outdoors television program. His love of music is woven through the pages of the book through in stories such as Jim as a young man, sneaking into a local church to practice on their piano to forming bands and playing clubs in college and beyond.

The steady stream of hilarious stories in Hooked will keep the reader turning pages in anticipation of the next adventure. Fishing stories abound from filming sailfish during hurricane conditions to bagging a swimming boar as the catch of the day. The characters Jim introduces are larger than life; the frolicking Tennessee boat Captain, the Sailboat bum, the pirates of the Norfolk docks all add to the crazy quilt of Jim’s life on the water. And of course there is a steady stream of beautiful ladies depositing souvenirs in his ‘tip jar’.

From his first kiss on ‘A’ dock, Jim recounts his love of and exploits with women. Jim’s stories of the perilous world of on-line dating are hilarious, touching, and a little scary. The stories take the reader from his first meeting with the woman that would be his first wife, to dating in post-divorce mid-life. His computer dating stories feature characters, such as the D.C Nympho, the trailer park psycho and finally Rose, the woman at the end of his cyber rainbow. In all his adventures Jim has never lost his wonder at the beauty and splendor of women, and he sees each woman that came through his life through those same awestruck, youthful eyes. This comes through clearly in every story.

As I read this book I felt more like I was sitting in a crab shack overlooking the Chesapeake, picking crabs and drinking beer while an old friend across the brown papered table regaled me with stories a salty as the rim around a Margarita glass and as lyrical as a well sung as a sea shanty.

Baugh’s is currently at work on his second book – “Cooked” – which in which Jim will surely delight the reader with more of his nautical tales and stories of life on the Chesapeakebut will also showcase recipes and cooking tips from cooking portions of his outdoors show. I also understand that Jim has opened a bar and Bar-B-Que restaurant in Hampton, so set sail for Hampton, have some Bar-B-Que and a cold brew and pick up a copy of Hooked.

"HOOKED" New Novel by Jim Baugh

"HOOKED" the autobiographical southern gothic humorous novel has awarded a publishing contract! As of today we have decided on the final publisher for the first novel. We will make the announcement on JBO TV web site and Facebook next week. The project will be released world wide both in e book and paperback mid fourth quarter 2011. Without a doubt, one funny read.

We have done some early testing with authors and publishers in the industry and the reviews have been very, very good. The 93,000 word manuscript will receive its final edit from the publisher over the summer and be ready for a Christmas release. The sequel to “HOOKED” is already outlined and most likely to be released second quarter 2013. The sequel, “COOKED” is based on JBO TV recipes and the stories behind each dish. For sure, one of the most entertaining cook books ever written.

Miami International Boat Show 2011

Over the past 40 years I have gone to more boat shows than I care to mention because it reminds me of old I am getting!!

I have to say that the boat show that I have enjoyed more than any others is our trips down to Miami for the International Boat Show. Yes the show is quite unbelievable and gives us a chance to see everything marine wise in one location.

Jim Baugh Outdoors has produced quite a few program segments in Miami and throughout the Florida Keys over the years. Some of the experiences have been something that will make a good screen play for sure. Anytime that I am hangin out with my friends and filming from West Palm, Miami, to Key West, there is GONNA be some stories, and not all pleasant.

One on trip I cracked a rib at the beginning of the trip filming offshore in Miami, and then had to film the rest of the week in the Keys with hardly being able to breath. That and one other injury made for some rather painful filming experiences down south. However I have always thought, if your gonna get injured, might as well be in Key West! Heck of a place to recover.

I highly recommend going to the Miami Show and then spending some time in the Keys. The past few years we only spend one day at the show, and then hit Key Largo and Marathon and start filming in some of my favorite waters in the world.

Try it, it will be a boat show trip you will remember for a lifetime.

Two NC State record Rockfish broken in 48 hours

That is right! In 24 hours, the NC state record Rockfish has been broken twice! The latest is 64 pounds caught on board the charter the Poacher out of OI.

The charter caught the new state record, their limit of fish, and release over 50 fish!

Time to head to NC and wet a line for sure!!

GO GREEN!!! ----Note these fish are caught within the three mile line from shore. Meaning leaving out of OI, you will burn very little fuel. Catch fish like this so close to shore??? WOW, cant beat it!!!!

Rockfish Shootout Tourney 2011

Today was a great day down in Virginia Beach celebrating the 2011 Mid Atlantic Rockfish Shootout!!!

Rockfish Report: BIG!

Big Rockfish are begin caught now at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Preferred bait and rig is drifting live Eels at night in the light line.

JBO TV will be filming most of next week to get some of the cows on camera for our 2011 series. This weekend is out due to at least two tourneys that will make the CBBT a parking lot. No Thanks, we will get um Monday!!

The fishing at the HRBT has been slow, however the fish are still stacked up at the James River Bridge, day and night.

UPDATE- The Sunset Boating Center Rock Tourney is cancelled. Upcoming events you don't want to miss,

Christmas, of course. The Rockfish Shootout in January and the Jim Baugh Rockfish Holiday.

Offshore Sea Bass Monster Trip!!! One of the BEST!!

What can I say, one of the best offshore trips ever. We have only had maybe one or two trips offshore for Sea Bass that were equal or better than this one as far as quality of Sea Bass being caught. This trip we had a six-pound Bass, lots of fours and threes. The captain hit a LOT of spots out at the Triangle wrecks and was putting us on fish constantly. There also was some Trigger fish and huge Flounder that were caught as well.

There were a couple of things that made this trip so special.

Here is the first: Kevin and Beth came along for some strong Sea Bass pullage and they certainly were not disappointed. However the big surprise was when Beth landed a HUGE 26 1\2 INCH FLOUNDER! This would be her sixth citation for the year with six different species. This means she gets to be awarded an expert angler award by the State. Actually she has more citations than six, I think 9 for the year, and the year is not over yet!!!! WOW! Very exciting for sure! BUT!!!!!!! She was a bit torn on what to do, keep this massive fish which anyone would love to through in the Cast Iron Skillet, or maybe even get mounted. OR- through it back, release the fish, and as a bonus, be awarded expert angler status, which is a big deal for us fisherman. Kevin and Beth agreed to release the fish unharmed, so they threw it back.
Now this is where it gets interesting, everyone on that side of the boat saw Beth release this huge Flounder back into the sea, and they went nuts! They could not believe that anyone would release a Flounder like that. She did, and it was quite a sight for sure. We filmed it, and will be on our show for sure. What a sight!!! What a lot of the people on board did not know was that Kevin and Beth can fill their freezer with Flounder any time they want. They are both very good anglers and have no problem catching Flounder. Good job guys, yall really had them going on the boat yesterday and I was so glad I was there to see that release. WOW! What Fun!! A catch of a lifetime!

Here is the second thing that was so special about this trip:

The people and crew. I have fished on head boats my entire life, and I will be 50 years old next August. We have always filmed head boats and especially love the offshore trips like this one out of Rudee Inlet. I have never been on board a boat where the entire group of fisherman were so hell bent on catching fish, even to the very last drop. Usually half the fisherman will be sea sick, lounging inside because they don’t feel well, or it is to cold, etc. This is typical of what I see on head boats.

But not on this trip. The boat was packed full and EVERYONE fished their butts off even in the dark with snow flurries, we were all bustin butt getting in every last deep drop. Very exciting, and we all caught a boatload of fish. There was even one elderly lady who could not walk hardly at all on the boat. We all helped her get around so she could fish, and she did. She was right there with us till the end, in the dark, snow, deep dropping. Just fantastic!

Now, when we film JBO TV I don’t get to fish as much as I like because I am filming and working on the story. My cameraman does filming, and so do I, so I don’t always have a fishing rod in my hands on these trips. Having said that, Mike and I were busy filming the show, yet by the end of the day we still managed to catch 60 pounds of Sea Bass. Mike and I split about 30 pounds of delicious Sea Bass filets. AWESOME!

The charter, Rudee Tours was just great as well. Very well maintained boat that even had satellite TV on the entire time we were fishing. Also when we got back, the fish cleaning guys were ready and did a good job at cleaning a LOT of fish. Way to go guys.

The Sea Bass season will close at the end of December, so book your trips NOW!! Only a few charters left, and you don’t want to miss this bite.

Congrats to all the anglers that went on this trip, we packed the boat pretty good. There was not room for any more anglers I thought, it really was standing room only while fishing. With all those people, there was not a huge problem with line tangles, there were some of course, but a lot less than I thought there would be.
DO your self a favor, book your offshore Sea Bass trip today, you will be glad you did!

Rockfish Nite Bite in Time For Thanksgiving Weekend

Hi Folks!

Traditionally Thanksgiving weekend sort of really kicks off Rockfish season and the good news is our Tog buddies Kevin and Beth went out and found them. Nice fish and a quick bite. Nothing like limiting out and back in time for a late dinner!

Kevin and Beth were fishing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and fished both artificals (casting) and live bait. (Eels). The third and fourth Island were the big producers and it is only going to get better very shortly.

The Bay season ends at the end of December and then the ocean season starts. After Thanksgiving is THE time to be down fishing the CBBT. For local info call Long Bay Bait and Tackle about boat launch info, good places to stay, etc.

Togs and Rockfish at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel

We had a GREAT day out on the water with our second filming with Kevin and Beth Synowiec. Today we targeted both Togs and Rockfish and the morning started out just a pretty as it could be with a fantastic Sunrise coming up over the Chesapeake Bay.

This trip Kevin and Beth brought what was supposed to be some killer bait. GREEN CRABS! These were some, ugly, nasty smelling suckers. Turns out the Togs liked them ok. We got a fish pretty soon after we had gotten everything rigged up. However we would find, that this day the bite would be off. This was not that surprising to me considering we had a big blow for the past three weeks. Defiantly a windy fall for sure. When it blows like this, fish scatter and it takes a while for them to return to their normal feeding patterns. Some of course can also migrate during this time however these Togs I believe are resident to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

Beth had put a lot of work into the bait and rigs and was determined to really put us on some great Tog action. They both did a great job and are known for their Tog expertise. Sometimes though, you just can’t buy a bite. We only caught two Togs during the morning and that was more than I had seen anyone else pull in. I was a happy camper and the footage for the show looked great!!

Unfortunately I had to get off the water early and I was really pushing Kevin and Beth to do a little Rockfishin because my daughter Casey was coming to see me that evening. My little girl had put in a phone request earlier in the week, “Pops, are you going to have any fresh Rockfish for me????” So, I did not want to let her down.

On the way in we threw out some “Magic” bait, and I mean yes, it was magic. We had a Rockfish on in about one minute. I promised I would not post what this bait was because they would be sold out very quickly at the stores. It is THAT good of a bait and really for the first time I can remember, I am going to keep my word and not mention what it was. All I can say is that is was an artificial lure. I had never used this lure before, or seen it, but it worked like no other. If you really want to know what it is, you will have to bug Kevin and Beth, because I promised and those two have really been great helping us film these Tog fishing shows. So for me, mums the word. Sorry.

I don’t think I really have the patience it takes to be a good Tog fisherman. It is also a lot of work and can be a VERY hazardous way to fish. You can damage your boat very easily on the bridge pilings. Plus the fact, Tog are not easy to catch and they love to bury themselves in the rocks once they are hooked. All in all, they just are not a piece of cake to catch.

Beth had hooked up with a Tog that did just this, immediately ran into the rocks and the fish could not be moved at all. Beth let out line, a lot of slack line, repositioned herself to the forward bow of the boat, sat and waited- LIKE 10 MINUTES!!. She waited for the fish to swim out of the hole, and then she reeled the line in tight and brought the fish to the boat. Now, that is a good angler who has the patience for Tog fishing. Good Job!!!!

After getting back to the dock, they gave me the fish to take to my daughter for dinner which was really very nice of them We will be fixing them up tonight and she is very excited.

Pulling out of the marina I got the phone call from my good friend Pyrate Pete who lives on his boat in downtown Hampton. “Jim, did you hear about my boat???” No I said. “It burned up! Caught on fire and now I am homeless”. So I hurried back and sure enough, Captain Pete’s boat had caught fire and was totaled. Needless to say we had a we bit of rum once we got back to the condo. Quite a day for sure.

Thanks again to Kevin and Beth, you can chat with them over on Tidalfish, they go by the name Clasicrockfish. If you want the name of that Rockfish lure you will have to get it from them. As for the Togs, the green and blue crabs did work, it just was a fairly slow day.

This will be a great show that will air during our 20011 series on the Sportsman Channel and we look forward to fishing with Kevin and Beth again Soon.

Fishing For Traffic

A fellow Tidalfish angler was stuck in traffic on the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel yesterday. Living around Hampton Roads the HRBT back ups can be something of a bit of a nightmare sometimes.

Well, low and behold since the traffic was not moving, this angler got his fishing rod out of his truck and started casting.

Sure enough he hooked into one fish, lost it when it reached the top, then landed a nice Flounder.

After the Flounder release, he then caught some nice puppy Drum, all while sitting in traffic on the HRBT!

So, next time you are in Bumper to Bumper traffic. If you have your fishing rod, you may find yourself in "Bumper to Flounder" traffic.

I went to one of my favorite piers on the southern Bay today and all I can say is I was glad I did not bring my fishing rod. NE wind was howling pretty good and the bite was off. VERY small Croaker and Spot and only a few small Rockfish at night.

Things are getting ready to change though with this blow that we have had along with the cooler temps. After Thanksgiving, look for some nice Rocks and Taylor Blues hanging out at the piers just waiting for some Pullage!!!

Rockfish Update!

Reports so far have been not all that great, however things are slowly picking up. This cold weather and the last 10 day blow should help things a lot.

Schoolies, although not very big, are beginning caught at the HRBT and CBBT. The same size fish are also being caught on the docks at night here on the river. After Thanksgiving would be a good time to start planning on getting on these Bay fish.

Our Tog Master friends Kevin and Beth Synowiec went out this week for a short while and did manage one nice Rock with live Bait. (mullet) We will finishing filming with Kevin and Beth our Tog show over the next couple of weeks. The Rock was a hefty 28 1\2 inch slot fish and was released.

Taugin on the Chesapeake

Taug (Tautoga onitis) fishing is something we just don’t do enough of. Since this is getting to be the time of year for the old Taugers, we thought we would hook up with a couple of Taug and Sheepshead Pros who really target the species.

I met up with Larry Regula and Kevin Synowiec along with his wife Beth. We boarded their 24 foot praline and had a nice ride out to the second Island.

There was supposed to be a small craft warning in the afternoon, however it did not wait. As soon as we got set up, she was blowing 22-25mph. The Bay was a rockin for sure, and so were we.

The bite was not hot for either Sheepshead or Taug, however we did manage to pull of some keepers and several through backs on the Taugs. The Sheepshead bite that had been so strong the week prior, was gone for today.

I ask Kevin if he thought the weather just was not conducive for catching these types of fish, he explained that some of the biggest Sheepshead they were catching was on a fast moving tide in fairly rough weather.

These guys worked very hard for their fish. We fished the tubes at the second and third, and also the pilings towards the high rise. Fiddlers and Blue Crab was the bait of choice.

I had gotten up at 3am, met everyone at 7am, and by 3pm in the afternoon we had all decided after what was a fairly hard day of fishing, it was time to head in and catch more another day. Earlier in the week, yes, I busted my knee again riding my bike. So bouncing around all day with a swollen knee meant one thing, and now! Hit the bar at Bubbas in Lynhaven. When we got to Bubbas, the bar was waiting for us, the food was good and the Rum was cold. We were all pretty happy.

JBO TV will film again with this great crew and the program will air during our 2011 series. Great bunch of folks who really know their stuff when it comes to Taug and Sheepshead Fishing.

Trout and Spot Rock

We filmed a good show yesterday catching some decent Trout and big Spot. We cruised in the Go Green Fishing Machine down to Little Creek and fished the Jetties catching of all thing, Crappie jigs. We got on the fish right away and had them about on every cast. We caught a few keepers and the rest were very close.

The Trout would bite right up next to the rocks, as well as literally right by the boat, we even saw some "Chasers" following the fish as we reeled them in. Bait was 1\8 ounce lead head, little joe's Chartruse with speckel flake. (yes, Crappie Jigs)

On the way out we tried the artificial reef at Little Creek, no luck there, so decided to head back to our fav. Spot holes in Hampton Roads and just nailed them during the last hour of outgoing tide. Very nice Spot. Once the tide stopped, that was it. The bite was BIG in 20 foot of water drifing.

Back at JBO Central, we fried up some Spot. Tout, and the best Calamari I have ever had. Barry B. had given it to me, and will ask him today where he got it. I have eaten enough squid in my day to grow suckers on my arms. This was the best I have ever had anywhere or fixed. As soon as I find out where he buys this fantastic Calamari, will post it here.

Legal Operation of Charter Boats-Guidance for Masters

This message is intended to provide clarification to recreational boaters seeking people to share expenses in the Hampton Roads area.

It is illegal for an uninspected vessel engaged in passenger for hire operations to be operated by an individual who is not licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard. Specifically, each uninspected passenger vessel of less than 100 gross tons as defined by 46 CFR 24.10-1 that carries six passengers or less, including one or more passengers for hire, must be under the direction and control of an individual licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard. The license must be kept in the operator’s possession (46 CFR 26.20-1). In addition to needing a licensed operator, each uninspected passenger vessel must meet all safety requirements outlined in 46 CFR 25.
Additionally, in accordance with 46 CFR 175.110, if a vessel carries more than six passengers, including at least one for hire, it must meet all Coast Guard safety requirements for an inspected passenger vessel.

The question of at what point an individual becomes a "passenger for hire" has caused confusion but is very straightforward. "Passenger for hire" means a passenger for whom consideration is contributed as a condition of carriage, whether directly or indirectly flowing to the owner, charterer, operator, agent, or any other person having interest in the vessel (46 CFR 24.10-1). Therefore, requiring strangers to share expenses constitutes a passenger for hire operation.
"Consideration" means an economic benefit or profit including payment of money or donation of fuel, food, beverage, or supplies. It does not include a voluntary sharing of the actual expense of the voyage (46 CFR 175.400).

If a vessel carries just one individual passenger, or "hop on," who provides anything more than a voluntary sharing of the actual cost of the trip, the vessel is operating as a passenger vessel and requires a Coast Guard licensed operator. If more than six passengers are involved, the vessel will require certification as a Coast Guard inspected vessel, as well as a licensed operator. In other words, if the owner, charterer, operator, agent or anyone else who has an interest in the vessel receives any money, fuel, or supplies that the passenger did not freely choose to share as part of the actual cost of the trip, the vessel is carrying a passenger for hire and must meet the following requirements:

(1) The master in command of a passenger for hire vessel must be an individual licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard.
(2) Vessels carrying more than six passengers, in which at least one is for hire, must be inspected and certified by the U.S. Coast Guard.
(3) This inspection includes but is not limited to certificates and documents, navigation safety, structural integrity, general health and safety, ground tackle, lifesaving equipment, fire protection, machinery/electrical equipment,
pollution prevention, and completion of emergency drills. Different regulations apply depending on service and route.

It is important to consider potential liability for violating these rules. If a passenger receives an injury as minor as a fishhook in their finger, the owner may face insurance liability. In addition, many boat loans have conditions in their terms that the vessel may not be used for commercial purposes. If an operator takes a paying passenger onboard without meeting the requirements for an inspected vessel and the passenger is injured or drowns, the vessel may be held to the inspected passenger vessel standard for purposes of criminal liability. If the operator does not have a license and was operating the vessel as an inspected passenger vessel, their insurance company may deny a claim. Compared to this legal and financial distress, acquiring a Coast Guard license and passing a Coast Guard passenger vessel inspection are much less burdensome tasks.

It is the owner’s responsibility to determine the legal requirements applicable to the type of operation in which the vessel is to be employed and to ensure every requirement is fully complied with before operations begin.

The Coast Guard is committed to the enforcement of all applicable federal regulations for passenger vessels. In accordance with Coast Guard Notice of Violation policies, maximum civil penalties up to $1,100 for failure to have a valid Coast Guard license in possession and available when vessel is carrying passenger(s) for hire will be sought in cases involving unlicensed operators in accordance with 46 CFR 26.20-1, and licensed operators found to be operating in violation of applicable regulations will face suspension and/or revocation of their merchant mariner credentials. The Coast Guard may notify operators’ banks and insurance companies which may change rates and coverage. In addition, the Cost Guard will submit leads to the IRS for unreported income that could result in civil fines and criminal prosecution by the IRS.
Further, we will take steps to educate the public in the area about federal requirements for passenger vessels. It is our goal that an educated consumer will seek out only properly licensed operators for their business to ensure their safety.

We are getting pounded here at JBO Central. With rain like this I am gonna line um up two by two! A lot of the area is flooded and none of it is tidal, all rain. Hard to believe. It has been raining since Sunday and it does not look like it will stop until tonight. Many business are closed today as well as schools, even the local affiliate tv station lost power this morning.

This does NOT help the fishing. The water is gonna be very stained and it will be a week before the James River clears up. (Well, as clear as the James can get)

Best bet would be to use high contrast colored lures for the upcoming opening of Rockfish season. Live bait as well. The Hampton River is full up with baitfish. One cast is all you need for hundreds of Shad.

There is a flood warning posted for most of our region and tornado watches as well.

I am putting extra lines on the Go Green Fishing Machine, then jump on my Go Green Storm Chaser Bike and go take storm pictures at the beach. Wave!! I will be the one wearing swimming trunks and a Columbia shirt with a Chocolate Lab swimming behind me that answers to Tina Turner.

Boy, I miss summer.

We had a ball filming a show with the Wish a Fish foundation over the weekend. Just a great group of kids that were so excited about catching fish! The kids may have special needs, one of them is more bait because these kids can catch fish!!!!! The pictures say it all. So does the Wish a Fish mission statement.

Back in the water!! WITH Fresh stabil fuel

The Go Green Fishing Machine just finished some service work and got a complete oil change. Everything got a good once over fresh fuel and stabilizer. She is running great!!

One thing to keep in mind that the less fuel your boat burns, the longer it stays in the tank. So do use fuel stabilizers especially ones that are designed to help combat the issues with ethanol. We will be talking a LOT about this on our show throughout the year.

The spot and Flounder bite is on big time, and the offshore bite off of Hatteras has been unreal. We will be heading there next week to film monster Dolphin and Whites.

Tomorrow, we are filming a show promoting Wish a Fish Foundation, we will report on the trip afterwards.

GGFM Fishing Report, August 2010

We are still catching nice Croakers in the pound and a half to two pound range however they are a bit shallow. Usually we will find them in deeper water around 40 feet this time of year. Now, 13 feet of water is producing some nice fish, and lots of them.

Flounder bite is still good however keepers are tuff to come by. You can catch all you want for release around the Bar channel ledge all the way down to the MM Tunnel.

Afternoons on top: The Spanish have shown up along the beaches of little creek. Fish a moving tide and our fav. rig is small top water birdies with a trailer. This bait has a lot of action on top and the Spanish just love it.

For a trip a little further up river, the Catfish bite is on and we will be filming a Blue Catfish show later this week.

Spades are still at the Fourth!! Try a lesser moving tide and fresh clams.

Today we had the pleasure of filming with Captain Dale Carlson on board the Jeanie Lee. A great boat, and a great crew. Our guest was JBO TV regulars for the past 22 years, all on one show. Joe Dudley, Captain Mike Wilburn, and Captain Earl Williams.

We started off quick catching some keeper Flounder and Bluefish. We then moved off to catch Spadefish off of the fourth island.
Was a great day of summer time fishing. I highly recommend booking a trip today and get on the bite.

At the end of the trip, on the way in, we spoted and fished for three Cobia, one was in the 40 pound class. Great fish, we will get um next time.

Heat Wave Recipe for a 109 degree day TUNA GYRO'S!!

Recipe: Blackened Yellowfin Tuna and Grilled Shrimp Gyro’s with Beefsteak Tomato relish and Greek Tzatziki Sauce.

Chesapeake Angler Magazine Aug-Sept Issue. JBO TV Feature

The summer of 2010 has been a hot one for sure. When we experienced those stretches of 100 to 110 degree days, most of what I craved was our swimming pool. That pool has certainly seen my arse just about every day during July, it has been a blessing. Probably my favorite summer time dish that I love to make and everyone just goes crazy for it, is homemade seafood Gyro’s. This is a very healthy, light, and super tasty treat that can be served with a variety of fillings. So, lets get started!! Time for a “Pita Party”!!

Home Made Pita Bread Recipe:

First up, take two cups of AP Flour and one cup of whole-wheat flour and place in a mixing bowl. Add two teaspoons of salt, 1\4 cup of olive oil and a 1\4 cup of honey. One package of fast rise yeast, and one cup of warm water. Mix in mixer for several minutes then place dough on a floured granite surface and knead for about five minutes. Let dough rise in an olive oil coated bowl for two hours, or double in size.

Then, knead the dough again and cut the dough into about 13-15 two inch round balls. Place them on a floured pan, and let rest for another 15 minutes. Then roll the balls out on a floured surface, and using a rolling pin, roll out the dough into oval shapes about 8 to 10 inches in width.

I like to use a grill, it is easy and can crank heat up to 500 degrees plus. Get the grill to 500, and be sure to have a Pizza stone on the grill. This is the surface of which you will cook the bread.

Using a pizza peel, place the rolled out dough on the pizza stone for only about three minutes, or until it gets puffy and brown. Flip the bread over for another couple of minutes, or until brown, take off the grill and place in large covered bowl to keep moist while cooking the rest of the pita bread.

You will be AMAZED at how good this Pita bread is, you will want to have it on hand all the ime!

Beefsteak Tomato Pepper Relish:
I use locally grown large beefsteak tomatoes and my own grown peppers. Just cut vegetables and place in a bowl and add half cup of red wine vinegar, ¼ cup olive oil, a little sea salt, cracked pepper and fresh oregano. Mix, and chill in fridge. Simple recipe, and good on anything!!

Greek Tzatziki Sauce:
Two cucumbers sliced and seeded place in food processor with two large cloves of Elephant Garlic. Blend for one minute. Then add two tubs of plain yogurt, salt, white pepper, one fresh squeezed lemon and three tbls of dill. I also add a little fresh spicy oregano. Once blended, chill for several hours or overnight.

Seafood: I used our fresh Yellowfin Tuna and Shrimp seasoned woith a little blackened seasoning, fresh lemon and lime and grill at 350 degrees. I put the Shrimp on skewers because it is very easy to cook and handle them on the grill this way. Cook until done, then set aside and keep warm.

SERVE IT UP!!
This part is very easy. First, place some of the seafood into a fresh folded pita bread, next top it off with the Greek Sauce, lastly, put on some of the beefsteak tomato relish and serve.

One FANTASTIC light cools and very tasty summer dish.
Have yourself a “Pita Party”, it will be one you wont soon forget!

Those are kinda new compared to Honda 4 strokes, how have the Suzukis been holding up mechanically after thousands of hours of use that saltwater guides put on them?

Quite unreal actually. I have been on boats like the one in West Palm Beach, about a 24 ft deadrise hauling over 1200 gallons of water. It was a bait boat. The single Suzuki enjgine had over 7000 hours on it. Never a problem. We have run these engines for ten years. These engines put the fun back in boating. Most reliable engines built I believe. We love our new 90, check out our web site for fuel info, you wont believe how efficient these engines are.

Ever since I was old enough to walk on a boat, I have always heard the old saying, “A boat is a hole in the water you pour money into”. In large part, this has been true in the past. In my own experience over the last 30 years of owning boats from high speed Bass boats, offshore fishing boats, and of course our 36 foot Trojan Tri Cabin, that hole in the water has accepted a lot of denero from old JB’s back pocket. This, during a recession can get rather old, really quick, and certainly be a damper on the boating \ fishing life. Nothing spoils a good day on the water than pulling up to the fuel dock and whipping out $1300 bucks to fill up with Gas. That is for a 28 footer, imagine pulling up with a 55 foot Viking. Or any nice size yacht yacht.

Spending your life savings on fuel for your boat no longer has to be the case. Jim Baugh Outdoors TV on average now spends less than $4 bucks a day for fuel expense, and we fish all day and sometimes, even fill the coolers to the brim with fish. I can honestly say that running the Go Green Fishing Machine has put the “Fun” back in boating and fishing. No longer do we worry about who is paying their share of gas money for the trip. I the captain, pay for the fuel, and make my crew pay for lunch and bait. This deal????-- I always come out ahead! The fact is, that bait or lunch either one, cost more than my $2-$3 dollar fuel bill for the day. It is quite amazing and I still find it hard to believe, but it is true. Never before have I enjoyed such a non-stressed relaxing fishing and boating experience than I have been on the Go Green Fishing Machine.

If you are thinking about getting a new boat or an older hull and re-power, I suggest you consider a boat that is full of floatation like our JVX20 Carolina Skiff. If you do not already have self-bailing drains on the JVX 20, just have them cut in by your local dealer. Self-bailing is important in smaller boats and having a boat that is virtually unsinkable gives me peace of mind while on the water. Truth be told, both our 36 Trojan and 28 Pursuit can sink like a rock. The JVX 20 is more like a large fiberglass life raft you can fish and boat out of. After being in over three sinking boats in my lifetime, I am most happy fishing and boating in a boat I know is not going to sink.

In the past coming into the mouth of Hampton Roads, I have swamped a 24 foot center console twice in a matter of an hour, it was that rough. Fortunately that boat was FULL of foam and just could not hold much water in the hull- only about 15 gallons. After that day, I always try to be on boats that are built full of foam and have reputations for boats that will float upright and level even if totally swamped. The JVX20 is just such a boat.

Purchasing an older hull and re powering I would be very careful and research the manufacturer as to how the boats are built. As far as re-power? Consider how much power you really need and do NOT overpower your boat. The Go Green Fishing Machine has a new second-generation Suzuki 90 hp and the boat just screams. I have not tried it, but I am sure the boat would be pushed fine with a 70 or 80 hp as well.

The handling of the JVX20 and the Suzuki 90hp is superb and cost next to nothing to run. When you consider that the purchase price of a rig like this is not that very much, and your daily fuel bill may run between $2 to maybe $5 bucks, you can now understand now when I say that a boat does not have to be a hole in the water one pours money into. The more research you do and find the right boat and engine combo that will be little maintenance, cost next to nothing to run, and be good for the environment, the more you will be comfortable with your boating experience.
Jims Broiled Seafood Skillet Recipe
August is a great time to fix up one of my favorite seafood dinners, Jim’s Seafood Skillet Platter. Here is what you will need.

*Fresh Flounder
*Fresh large Sea Scallops
*Fresh Shrimp, 16 count or better
*Fresh Lemons and Butter
*White wine
*Fresh herbs-Chives, oregano, parsley, and thyme
*Cast iron Skillets.
*One cup cooked yellow rice
*Lobster stock

First, get your ten-inch round cast iron skillets ready, I bought mine at Wall Mart cheap. Coat the bottom of your skillet with butter and pre cook the yellow rice with Lobster or shrimp stock. I always have some on hand in the freezer, whenever we have Shrimp or Lobster, I make stock out of it and freeze.

Cook the rice using the stock and set aside, once cooled, place a small cupful into the skillet. Next lay the Flounder filet over the rice, then place the Shrimp and Scallops to the side to fill the rest of the Skillet. Pour in some while wine and some more stock and a five pats of butter over all the seafood. Sprinkle all herbs over the dish as well as some fresh cut lemon slices.

Cook at 350 for about 15 minutes, then broil off the top for about a minute just to brown the seafood a little. The skillet will be VERY hot, so be sure to be careful when handling and us hot plates while serving.

This, guaranteed, will be one of the best seafood platters you will ever have, try it!!

Jim Baugh Outdoors TV had a great shoot out Hampton Roads this fourth of July week. Fishing was good, Croaker, Trout, and even a Ribbon fish! Captain Earl was our guest along with Ruthie, weather was good and our all day fishing expenditure for fuel was about $2.30 cents. We did cruise around Hampton Roads a bit finding the schools of Croaker so our gas bill did exceed $2 dollars. Does not happen that often. Go Green Fishing Machine!!! ROCKS!! TITLE: A day at my favorite Bar, only spent $2.80

To tell the truth, we have finally gotten this fishing thing down. Well, not for every species, but for Croaker, Flounder, Spot and Trout, the best concentrated location that I have found is the area of the Hampton Bar and Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. Traveling to these locations from the Hampton River in the Go Green Fishing Machine (GGFM) is just a pure joy. Last week we filmed at the Bar and fished all day, filled the coolers, and spent $2.80 is gas, that was it. The Second generation Suzuki 90 hp four stroke and the Carolina Skiff JVX20 with Smart tabs is just simply the most fuel-efficient rig we have ever fished. When the bite is on at the Hampton Bar, it really makes me smile for many reasons. Ending up back at the dock with an hour or two of filleting fish, always makes me smile. Spending less than three dollars in fuel for a day of fishing???? Well all I can say is, I am glad I have lived long enough to see it. Between fishing and boating out of the Go Green Fishing Machine and riding my Go Green bike everywhere in Hampton, my dependency for oil (foreign or domestic) has dropped by about 95%. We now only fill up our 18 gallon gas tank in the GGFM about twice a summer, and I have gone over four months without even to have to put Gas in my car. The Go Green lifestyle is not only good for the environment, but my wallet as well. Save a dollar-Make a dollar. It adds up in every way

This season so far, the bite really has been good at the Hampton Bar. We have been catching a mix of Trout, Flounder and Croaker just using standard bottom rigs and regular Squid. The magic depth for us has been fishing the ledge of the bar in about 31 feet of water. Once we shallow up to about 20-25 feet, nothing. I expect July will be about the same. The bite has been so good at the Bar, we have not yet even ventured out to the MM tunnel. The MM was our hot spot last year in about 50 feet of water on the west side of the tunnel just past the 70foot ledge. We will still fish the MM Tunnel, however as long as the bite is hot here at the Hampton Bar, we are staying!

I had a guest captain on the show last week and we left out of the Hampton River from JBO Central to fish the Bar area. The captain loved the Go Green Fishing Machine, and could not believe the speed and power the boat had with the 90hp Suzuki four stroke. He was also surprised when I told him I would pay for the gas, if he would buy dinner, he said, “Man, did I get the good end of the deal!” Not so, we spend only $2.80 in gas and fished all over the bar and tunnel. His grocery bill to fry the fish was five times that of our fuel bill.

My guest Captain was long time friend Captain Earl Williams. Captain Earl loves to rig out everything to the max and he ask me why I did not put a hard top on the Carolina Skiff. I explained to him, the reasons were simple. First and most important, some of our new fishing grounds in Hampton require a minimum amount of clearance for your boat. So low, that we have to duck down in the boat just to clear going under the bridge. High tide even can be an issue while fishing these locations. These locations on the Hampton River are FULL of fish and a hard top would knock these fishing grounds out for us- some awesome fishing right at our doorstep. The GGFM does have a bimini top that I love. Shade is very important while fishing during July and August, and nothing shades better than a bimini. With the top down, there is also less wind resistance, so you sort of get the best of both worlds. Like my pops always said, the KISS theory is always the best. (Keep it simple stupid)

When you come to fish the Hampton Bar, don’t forget the areas behind Fort Monroe and also back in the Hampton River. These areas are hot spots for Croaker, Drum, Trout, and Rockfish. You can also find most of what you will need for fishing for the day. Sunset boating center is a great fuel stop that also has bait and snacks. They also can do a quick haul out for ya should you need a fast power wash on your hull. Bluewater also is a good fuel stop, and has Surfrider restaurant right there, great place for a lunch time break coming in from the Hampton Bar.

Cookin at Dirty Dicks The show wraps up with some recipes using some of the fish we caught on the Stormy Petrol, Triggers and Whoo's. Dirty Dicks is located right at the marina in Hatteras Village, these folks really put on a GREAT cooking segment and these were some of the best seafood dishes we have had.

The Navy is still looking for four missing unmanned subs that were somewhere near the Thimble Shoals Channel and the Bay Bridge Tunnel. Running into one of these things on your boat could ruin your Flounder trip REAL fast. Be careful boaters.

Can you imagine Spadefishing at the TS Lighthouse and hookin into one of these things?? I wonder if they like Clams.

Navy, please find these things.

UPDATE: The Navy said that as of 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, a search was still under way for the missing mini-subs.

Four underwater unmanned vehicles went missing Sunday during training to conduct search, classify and map missions.

The Navy, Coast Guard and local authorities were searching for the missing vehicles in the Thimble Shoals Channel between the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, a Navy news release said.

Communication was lost with four of the 13 unmanned vehicles Sunday about 1 p.m. while the vehicles were using bottom-mapping sonar to look for mine-like contacts in the water as part of the training. Search and recovery operations began immediately.

Efforts continued Monday using small-craft, shore-based teams, air assets and marine mammal systems, which could include sea lions and dolphins trained to hunt mines.
The cause of the vehicles’ disappearance is under investigation. The missing vehicles do not pose a danger to civilians or the environment, the Navy release said, but if an unmanned vehicle is discovered floating in the water, boaters should avoid it as they would any other navigation hazard.

If one of the missing vehicles is found, please call the U.S. Second Fleet commander at (757) 443-9821.

The unmanned vehicles were being used as part of a larger training exercise with about 2,500 personnel from Canadian and U.S. military forces and government civilian agencies. The annual training exercise will continue through Friday.

For us today fishing burning only 1.12 gallons of gas----Equals a cooler of fish! Thanks to Suzuki Marine and Carolina Skiff , The Go Green Fishing Machine delivers another great day on the water.

REPORT:

Captain Earl, Ruthie and I went out yesterday to search out some Flounder and Croaker. First stop was the Hampton Bar, and the bite was so good, we did not need to go anywhere else.

Using a flounder rig and some standard bottom rigs, we caught Trout, Flounder and Croaker up two a pound and a half.

Magic depth was 31 feet, fishing the ledge of the bar. We saw both the Ocean Eagle and the Sally T both doing well catching fish as well.

The wind was up just a bit, so we had to do a lot of running up and down the bar, keeping our baits in the 31 foot zone. We did try a little deeper bite in 40 feet of water, but not much luck. 31-32 feet was definitely where the bite was.

The Go Green Fishing Machine once again proved to be a fuel sipper. Running the new Suzuki 90 hp four stroke and the Carolina Skiff JVX 20, our total fuel usage for the day was 1.12 gallons. That is it. Still fishing for anywhere from two to three bucks a day for gas. AWESOME!!

One the way in back to Hampton, we had a nice stop at Surfrider for lunch, then cleaned our cooler of fish back at JBO Central. One awesome day.

Today, now that we have found them, we will do some filming for the 2011 season. Also, we did see a Cobia right off the bow of our boat, awesome fins!! Reports at the Buckroe Fishing Pier also have some Cobia showing up.

NOW IS THE TIME TO BE HERE IN HAMPTON!!! The bite is on! Weather is great!

Book now to fish this weekend, bring the family. There is a big outdoor art show at Buckroe Park this Saturday with Slapwater playing center stage starting at 2pm. Be a good day to fish the Pier as well!!

Sailing the Chesapeake

We wrap up this show with a nice sailing segment produced with Captain Trav out of Hampton Virginia. This was filmed during the famous Wed. night sailboat races that depart right out of Hampton. The sailing segment also has a WONDERFUL original soundtrack piano score, written just for this filming. Great stuff!!!

"Ruthie Spot" will air Nationally on the Sportsman Channel in two weeks, and we will make it one of our programs available to stream worldwide, 24\7 on our Jim Baugh Outdoors Web site. Should be up within a couple days.

TITLE: An Old Standard

There is a reason why old standards become old, and standard. Can anyone doubt that Round Midnight is a classic Jazz standard?? Probably not. In the world of angling, I doubt that anyone can dispute that wire lining for Rockfish is as successful as Round Midnight is to Jazz. When something works, no matter how old, usually you stick with it. While new inventions and methods of catching fish are always welcome in my book, it is always nice to be able to pull out a couple of old standards from my back pocket, and be sure to catch fish!

I would like to note that while discussing wire lining in this article, it is important to note that not only did we limit out on Rockfish on this trip, but we only burned about 1$ is Gas. Fishing out of Hampton is the best location in the world, and running one of the most fuel-efficient rigs on the water helps a lot as well. The older I get, the more I realize how important knowing what tried and true is all about. Wire lining is just one of those techniques that produces fish in a variety of ways, and with a variety of species. What make wire lining so successful?? It is just one word. And here it is--- CONTROL.

The hardest thing in fishing is getting your bait to the exact position and location you want it, and keep it there with out a lot of fuss and aggravation. Wire lining does just that. There is less drag on the line, meaning less drift and more accuracy while fishing. Bait placement is so important. The other GREAT thing about wire lining is that the line is so tuff, that you can run it around pilings getting your bait in between bridge pilings. Also it makes it very easy to fish water columns. How heavy the line is determined by what type of fishing you will be doing. Fishing the HRBT we use lighter line than we do fishing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, however the rig is usually the same. I tie a three way with about three feet from the sinker, and then leader line going out to the bait. Fishing the CBBT, we will usually use a longer leader than fishing the HRBT. Once you have your favorite rod rigged up with wire, don’t only aim for Rockfish, but togs and other species as well. While fishing structure like the artificial reefs offshore, wire line can be a huge asset.

Control over your bait presentation is very important, and wire lining helps in this area greatly. However boat control is just about as important. While fishing the bridge pilings, I only will let one or at most two fisherman with lines in the water of the stern. That is it. The captain has to be at the helm the entire time positioning the boat judging tide, current, and distance from the bridge at all times. The way the current rips around here in the Chesapeake, one can hit a piling mighty fast, and it happens often. So be sure your crew is prepared to fish one or two lines only, and let them know the captain will not be helping to land fish, because his hands will never leave the wheel. Believe me, this advice can easily save your day, and boat!!

A lot of people I have talked to over the years sometimes have negative comments about wire lining. I have heard comments like, “I want to feel the fish more” or “I don’t want to dedicate a rod to wire”. Well, I always respond by asking them if they want to catch fish. Now, wire lining is not the only way to catch Rocks around structures like bridges and tunnels. We love to go out at night and cast light tackle in the light line and pull out some nice Rockfish. The fish are so thick here you can actually see the fish, and cast to which one you want! I just love that, very fun. However that fishing is of course at night. Sometimes it will be that hick in the fall.

Wire lining is just a good standard to always be ready to do. I cant think of many times, if ever, I have been skunked while Wire lining. I have been skunked before doing just about everything else.

So, while there will always be new and inventive ways to catch fish, don’t forget about the old tried and true standard-Wire lining. It may just put dinner on the table!!

Go Green Save Green -And eat lots of FISH!!! Buckroe Pier Bite is on!

Talk about an inexpensive, fun, relaxing and enjoyable way to entertain your family for an entire day, and night!!! Go Pier fishing at Buckroe Pier in Hampton now. The bite is on, coolers of Croaker and some nice Flounder up to 20 inches are now being caught.

With the Croakers hiting, the Cobia can not be that far behind. We will be filming the Cobia tourney and reporting here when the man in the brown suite shows up.

Reports at the HRBT and the MM have been a bit slower. Looks like the bottom fish are just now making their way in.

We will have the Go Green Fishing Machine back in the water next week and start hunting hard for all of our slimy swimming friends.

TITLE: All Spades can be a great hand!

While playing poker, everyone wants a sure hand that is going to win the big pot! Well, when it comes to angling, the best hand to hope for this time of year is all Spades, Spadefish that is.

WOW, these are like one of my all time favorite fish to catch. They are strong as an ox, will break tackle easily, they are beautiful to watch underwater, and they do great service to hot oil and a cast iron skillet. Also Spade fishing around the Chesapeake Light Tower is more like a reunion. Every year I see folks I know just anchored up, having a ball catching Spadefish.

May - June is a great time to go to the tower for Spadefish, however it is not the only place to catch Spades. Seems like they are just about everywhere from, the light tower to up past the Cell. Many times when we are fishing the CBBT for Flounder, a school of Spades will follow the Flounder up while being reeled in. One of the best trips for Spades we ever had was out near the high rise one August. My son Ben, then only about 10 yrs old, and my buddy Joe Dudley and I found a large school of Spades that would not leave us alone. I mean, I am not sure that day if we found the Spades, or the Spades found us! Boy, we caught a mess of them and had one heck of a fish fry back at the house.

Catching Spades, like anything else at times can be very easy, or very difficult. They can be rather finicky. When this happens, lighten everything up as much as possible including your bait. Freeline, even without a split shot, nothing but a hook, small bait, and let out a lot of line. This will work if they are not in the feeding mode. Be patient, it may take several passes of those Spades before they bite. Once they do, it is a bit like Dolphin fishing, they all seem to start to turn on. Standard bait is usually fresh cut clams while chumming a bit overboard, and a lot of people are using some artificials now. If they are biting, it all works.

This time of year if you are going to the tower and you have never fished for Spadefish, I recommended to go with a Charter Captain. There are a TON of them who charter for Spades, just look on our web site or here in the Chesapeake Angler Magazine. For the first time, it will be an easier and more fun experience and you will learn a lot. One of our oldest and favorite Spade fishing captains is Captain Dale Carlson on board the Jenny Lee. The season sure is off to a GREAT start after such a harsh winter

Bluefin seem to have moved closer to the Point, and even further north. Fish are still being caught, mostly on the jig, ranging from 100- 200 pounds on average with a few giants from 300-400+ thrown in here and there.

A great yellowfin bite started Saturday and continued into Sunday near the 280 Rocks. A couple of boats came in with a dozen or more between 30 and 40 pounds. The boat 'Marlin Mania' out of Teach's was hooked up with a nice blue marlin Sunday, but he had other plans and hit the road.

I fished on 'Still Think'n' with owner Bob DuBell and some buddies (Jeff Brown, Mike Winner, and Colin Ottersten) and we got a nice Bluefin that weighed 150 pounds on the troll. We also had a mistery bite that was very marlin-like that never came tight. Pirate's cove reported good catches of Bluefin and several wahoo this weekend. Spring came in and so did the tuna!!!

TITLE: Go Green Save Green Head Boat Fishing!

With spring at our front doorstep and summer by the back porch, now is the time to start making travel plans and just exactly where to wet your line. While we all are looking forward to firing up our boats for all of our outings that are surely to include early Flounder, Croaker, and of course Rockfish, make plans now for one of the most enjoyable trips you will take, head boat fishing out of Hampton Virginia.

Did you know that by going on a head boat for the day, you are actually going green??? Charter boats, especially head boats carry a lot of passengers very effectively, efficiently, and usually burn little fuel. Departing out of Hampton, fishing the HRBT, MMT, and the mouth of Hampton roads will take you to some of the best fishing grounds in the Chesapeake Bay. The run is not that far, only a few miles to any of those fishing holes. Burning a little diesel fuel, one boat, carrying 75 people, as opposed to 75 boats carrying one or maybe two folks at a time. Plus, it is just a fun easy day for everyone. Head boat fishing is also a great way to entertain family and corporate events as well, all of which is rather inexpensive to do. Head boat fishing is something that myself and my family have done for our entire lives. We just love it. Here is our story and some good head boat info.

I will not go back as far as my childhood, but will start with my son Ben Baugh back when I first starting taking him offshore when he was about five or six years old. The first trip I took him on was what turned out to be an annual event for the next 10 years. What can I say, the Carolina Princess out of Morehead City. Our family vacationed there for years, stayed on Atlantic beach, and I always would take our center console show boat. We loved hanging out on Shackelford Island with the horses, and would fish the beaches for Spanish and Dolphin. Do be careful of the rip current at that inlet, it is very strong. One time I pulled an eight year old boy out of the water, he was heading out to sea. After I hauled him in the boat, I found his parents on the island, they had no idea where he was. This area is also known for its unreal giant Bluefin Tuna fishing during the winter months.

This was our second year of vacationing down at Atlantic beach and boy were we in for a real experience. Little Ben was on his second offshore trip with me on the Carolina Princess and before we left the dock, we noticed that the wind was howling big time. There was Ben, me, and about 40 Chinese people on the boat. Most of them spoke English, and we were all fired up about catching a boat load of Trigger fish, Snapper, Dolphin, just everything! Well, the captain came on the horn and said, “We are not canceling the trip today, however it is gonna be an EXTREMELY rough ride. Anyone wanting to get off, we will refund your money, no problem.” I looked down at little Ben Baugh and said, “Son, what do you think, want to go back to the beach house, maybe ride the go carts today??” Little Ben said, “No dad, lets go fishin!!!” To be truthful, I was worried, this was gonna be a tuff day, and was not sure if Ben was gonna be sick or not, this was his first real rough offshore trip at only about six years old.

What can I say, this was about as bad as it gets, the inside of the Princess was a large area, plenty of seating however all the seats were already takin by the 40 or so Chinese friends that we had met on the Charter. So, Little Ben and I had to sit on the floor next to the trashcan in front of the galley. We “Thought” it was the trashcan, but turns out it was the “Barf Can!”

The waves were so rough, I did not want Ben nor I to even stand up while this 90+ boat was moving, so, we were committed to the floor. Ben and I were doing “OK”, Ben had never experienced anything like this during his first 6 years of life. In about 45 minutes, it starting happening. Many, many, of our Chinese, friends starting running out of their seats and heading straight for us, only to duck their heads in the barf can and hurl their breakfast, lunch, dinner, everything they had in them ended up in the can, of which, we were sitting under. Now, people were standing in line to get sick, and Ben and I were just looking up at them hoping they were not going to miss the can and barf on us.

Many times I looked at little Ben who was sitting beside me and would ask, “are you ok son???” A little voice said, ,”Yes dad, are you?” after about three hours of this, we finally made it to the fishing grounds and started fishing. Ben of course had his life jacket on and I also had a line tied to him so he would not fall overboard, it was that rough. After Ben had caught a few fish he ask if he could hang out inside while I caught fish and could he have some money. “Sure Son”. I went and checked on Ben in about a half hour, he was talking up a storm with the cook in the Galley, stuffing fresh grilled hot dogs in his mouth with a Snickers bar in the other hand and a popped coke on the counter having the time of his life. Neither Ben or I got sick that day, but if I was ever gong to pick a day to get sick, that would of been it.

The Carolina Princess is one of the largest offshore head boats on the East Coast and it was so rough that day, one of the fishermen did get thrown overboard when the boat pitched side to side. We grabbed him and pulled him back in, he was dangling off the side of the boat about to go in the drink. I have never seen it that rough offshore before. An almost 100 foot boat being tossed around like a cat top. Believe it or not, we did catch some nice fish that day, although only a few of us could fish in such rough seas.

On the way back from offshore we had a head on sea, so the going was slow. Little Ben Baugh had his sea legs well in place by then and he ask me, “Dad, Dad, Dad, lets go on the top deck of the Carolina Princess and watch the waves blow up!!” I asked if it was ok, we were the only ones up there, we went, and Ben could not believe what he saw. The entire front of this 95 foot boat burying itself into a 10 foot sea with the waves exploding over the entire boat. Ben kept screaming, “Dad, it is like BOMBS going off, COOL!!!” “Look dad, here comes another BOMB! YIPPEE!!

I think this was a pretty good experience for my son. Ben went on as he grew and fished all the time on our show, later became an Eagle Scout, graduated top of his class in Geology in college and now is finishing his masters on a full scholarship. What he does for fun?? You can’t keep him off a mountain in Washington State, nor out of the white water. Ben will be doing two weeks down the Colorado this summer. Point I am trying to make is, getting your kids involved in the outdoors at a young age is a good thing, it can only help give them a lot of future interest, respect for the environment, and hopefully keep them out of trouble!!

So, as you can tell, head boat fishing, pier fishing, surf fishing, offshore, whatever, has all been a very important part of our lives. Head boat fishing is just a great, easy, and inexpensive way to get your family involved in a wonderful outdoor outing on the water.

Go Green \ Save Green Spinnin' Chicken Soup

I am always amazed when talking about “Goin Green” with viewers, readers, fans, even the mailman, that the topic of Global Warming always comes up. That is fine, however for me it is just a small part of what Goin Green is all about. Saving our resources is not only good for our environment, but good for our economy-Especially JB’s thin wallet! It is true, that in most cases, Goin Green saves green! What is good for the environment can also be good for your wallet. The following recipe is a good example. After all, how would you like to serve a delicious meal that can feed fifteen people for only $6 bucks, and save $40 dollars on your electric bill?? This is how I did it. You can to!

First up, we are going to start with Chicken. Not just ANY chicken, but the discounted whole Chicken that was in the quick sale bin at Food Lion. I use my MVP card like a high roller at a slot machine. I check on line weekly to see what the specials are, then run to the store, and buy like four chickens. Freeze three for later. For this meal, the whole Chicken was only $3.27! While at the store, I also picked up some onions, celery, and carrots. That is really about it.

Next up and highly recommended. Go to Walmart and spend a total of $49 bucks for a GE rotisserie convection toaster oven. Don’t bother looking elsewhere, save your gas, because this little oven is exclusive to Walmart. Ever since I have bought this machine, I have not turned on my oven once, not once. It takes so much less to heat this oven, conserving a LOT of energy. We cook a lot around here for the TV show and magazine columns so we use the oven a lot. However since this toaster oven is large enough to cook just about anything, I simply have not been firing up the big oven at all. In one month, from Dec-Jan when we had all that cold weather, snow, etc, my electric bill dropped by $40 dollars. We have been cooking everything in that little oven, even our 9-inch deep dish Pizza and rotisserieing up to 5-pound birds! So, if you don’t have one of these awesome and very inexpensive toaster ovens, run out and get one, and yes, it will even make toast. When I was shopping on line for this unit, the reviews were fantastic. Also, the prices for competitive ovens were twice as much. You will pay for it in one months use, it is also stainless steel.

When I was researching Chicken soup on line, I was surprised at the amount of BAD recipes out there for America’s famous Chicken soup. Well, I am here to tell ya, this one is probably the best, and you START with cheap Chicken and a cheap toaster oven!

Preparing the Bird
First thing I do is injecting the Chicken with either a Creole butter sauce or Texas Pete, or Both. The Creole sauce is just melted butter, garlic powder, and some Cajun seasoning. The recipe for Texas Pete--- buy Texas Pete.

Inject the bird in the breast, legs, and wings and let stand for several hours or overnight. Next up, take the bird and stuff the cavity with onions, celery, and carrots. Then coat the Chicken in more Creole sauce and some jerk or Cajun-seasoning rub on the skin. Take some fresh Bay leaves and place under the Chicken skin. Now you are ready to simply insert the skewer through the bird and wrap the wings and legs with butchers twine. This is important so that it will fit well in the oven, and keep the tips from burning. Place the Chicken in the rotisserie toaster oven and cook at 300 degrees for about an hour and a half. When the internal temp is around 160-165, it is done.

Now, let the chicken set for about 10 minutes, this lets the juices get back into the meat. Then slice everything up, separating the breast meat and use to make a couple of GREAT sandwiches. Take the rest of the meat and chop and place in a bowl that will be later added to the crock-pot.

Stock
Now, get a large pot and put in about 8 cups of water, and place the remaining parts of the Chicken, AND ALL THE VEGTABLES THAT WERE IN THE CHICKEN. Also throw in the pot some fresh carrots, more celery, onion and an entire clove of Garlic and 20 whole peppercorns. I also put in another five Bay Leaves, bring everything to a boil, then let simmer for 45 minutes. Strain, and save all the veggies and chop them up to add to the crock-pot. Let the stock cool in the fridge, then take the fat off the top of the stock with a spoon.

Crock Pot
Simply add the stock to the Crock Pot, and all the cooked Veggies, add some more Bay leaves and some fresh thyme. Some fresh Parsley and a small dash of oregano. Let this continue to cook for several hours in the Crock Pot. It is not necessary to cook all day, everything has already been cooked and seasoned.

One hour before serving, add some brown and white rice along with a half bag of egg noodles. Stir occasionally. That is about it.

This will be one of the best Chicken soups you will ever try. Don’t miss a step, like buying pre cooked rotisserie chicken. This works “ok”, but leaves out some important flavor steps.
Keep in mind that the veggies inside the chicken -while doing the rotisserie are the same veggies that goes into the stock, then into the crock-pot. It just makes the best tasting Chicken soup you will ever have, and it is inexpensive. Fifteen bowls of soup and two big Chicken sandwiches all for around $6 bucks.

You can add a dash of salt while cooking however we try to cook everything low sodium. Fact is with the injection marinade in the Chicken adds enough salt. There is PLENTY of flavor.

Other Tips
Be sure to use butchers twin to wrap up the bird nice and tight. Be sure to tie the legs very tight so that it will keep all the veggies inside the bird and won’t fall out during the rotisserie
Occasionally baste the bird in the oven, this is easy to do and does not take much marinade
Do not overcook the noodles, mushy pasta does not make a happy spinnin chicken soup.

TITLE: New from Carolina Skiff and Suzuki Marine-2010!

Last Spring Jim Baugh Outdoors TV had the pleasure of heading down to Waycross Georgia to pic up our new show boat, the Go Green Fishing Machine. This was a JVX20 rigged out with smart tabs and a new second generation Suzuki 90hp four-stroke engine. We thought we had an idea of just how fuel-efficient this boat and motor package would be, figuring that average fuel expenditure for a day may be around $20 bucks. Well, we were off quite a bit, our fuel expenditure for a day of fishing actually ranges between $1.50 and $3.00. Hard to believe, but this rig is really just that good. No longer can it be said that a boat is a hole in the water one throughs money into. Now, you can actually, fish, boat, have a great time on the water without even breaking a twenty dollar bill. Now in this economy, that is something to be excited about.
Some other things to get excited about are some of the new products for 2010 from Carolina Skiff and Suzuki Marine. We will start with the boat first off.

Franc White, 84 and still Flyin High!!!!

We have been broadcasting Jim Baugh Outdoors for 21 years now, and ever since the day we first aired, I always get ask about Franc White of the Southern Sportsman. I grew up watching Franc and about 20 years ago, had the pleasure of broadcasting in several states in adjacent time slot to Franc. Both shows pulled good ratings and we usually aired back then on Sunday mornings.

I have met Franc on a couple of occasions in North Carolina when we were both covering stories for our shows. Franc was a REAL character, and actually in person, even more of a character than he was on TV.

Who else in the world could come up with,

"Swinus Americanus"

and of course,

"Do yourself a favor, and take a kid fishing"

and my all time fav.

"Dont re-elect nobody, not even your mama!!!"

This is the truth, rarley in my career has anyone ever ask me about other outdoor TV Show host, except for Franc White. Franc has left an invaluable impression on a lot of us.

Well, a couple weeks ago I got an e mail from someone named Mike Roberson, who told me he and friends were meeting Franc in NC and they are all going to fly airplanes. He ask me if I wanted any photos from the trip, I said, "All YOU CAN GET!!!!"

As far as I know, these are the first pics of Franc that anyone has seen in many years.

He is 84 years old!!!!!! And still flyin!!

Subject: Fish and Flying in Plymouth NC"

Hey Jim,

Here are a few pictures from the day with Franc. It was a beautiful day temp in the 60's and clear sky. My friend picked Franc up from his private airstrip and met us at South Oaks grass strip in Ayden. Then we flew to Vanceboro where we met up with some other friends at another grass strip. From there we the 12 of us spread out in 6 planes and made an aerial caravan out to the Pamlico sound and around Pantego then over to Plymouth for lunch. Every Wednesday, weather permitting, the airport in Plymouth cooks lunch. So you just fly over and you can park go have lunch and talk shop and get some cheap aviation fuel, too!! Knapp and Wade operate the FBO there and do a great job of making everybody fill welcome. They also have people drive in for their free lunch on Wednesday. We left there and fly to Edenton and the to Tarboro and back to Greenville, NC. It was a great day with great friends! I asked Franc several times what he was thinking and every time he could hardly find the words. He was so happy to be out flying again and meeting new friends. Franc is now 84 and still looks the same as I always remembered."

Jim’s Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza

When it is late January, early February and the Rockfish have moved some 15 miles off our coast and we are stuck with a three mile limit, AND the last of the fresh vacuum sealed frozen Rockfish was served up for your lady friend for New Years, What do you do?? What,- do you do??
My first thought since it has been cold and rainy lately was to jump in an airplane, fly to Chicago and pig out on the worlds most famous Deep Dish Pizza. Now THAT would be FUN!!! Great idea! But, -wait a minute. Gazing at my checkbook, looks like I need to pull out my MVP card and start pedaling my Go Green Bicycle to Food Lion or Save a Lot!

It may be hard to believe, but you can make Chicago style deep dish pizza right at home, and it is just as good, if not even better than what you would get in Chicago. Here today, we are celebrating the deep dish pizza and giving out to all our wonderful viewers and readers my own very special deep-dish pizza recipe. It is about as good as it gets.

There is the debate as to which is better, Chicago style or New York Style pizza. I never understood this at all. Both pies are such different beasts, they should not even be considered in the same category. Both are fantastic, and both are called, “Pizza”- and it should stop there. It is about the same as comparing a Rockfish Filet with a Tuna Filet or a Swordfish Filet. They are all fish, and all fantastic, but all very separate in just about every way. Which one is best?? They ALL are the best, that is, as long as you know how to prepare the filet. Fish is a lot like pizza, one of the biggest keys to preparing each is that everything is fresh. Everything, including the herbs.
First a little background on where I got my deep-dish recipe. There are several famous deep-dish pizza restaurants in Chicago. My recipe takes a little bit from several of the better known restaurants, combined what I liked best while keeping the recipe as authentic as possible. I also made the recipe a bit healthier than some of the other pies that are popular. Both the dough and sauce recipe can be varied somewhat depending on your individual liking. We just love Basil (lots of it) parsley, garlic, and oregano, so my pie probably has more of these ingredients than the original. Some die hards will even say that if oregano is in the pie, it is not authentic. That may be, but I still love oregano, so I use it. Now, here is from start to finish how to make Jim’s Chicago style DEEP DISH PIZZA! AT HOME!

The Pan
The JBO TV Kitchen is located on the Hampton River and it was totally renovated two years ago with the most efficient stainless steel appliances I could find. I also put in granite countertops which is a great surface for making all sorts of dough recipes. One thing that I do not have is a brick oven heated with charcoal and wood! That one would have been a little difficult to pull off in a condo. Soooooo, here is the trick for the pan with a deep-dish pizza. Use what we use, stoneware by Pampered Chef. This clay stoneware dish is a 9-inch square that is well over 3 inches deep. The key to stoneware is that it gets VERY hot and cooks evenly. Basically it simulates a brick oven that you would find in high-end restaurants. This stoneware does need to be seasoned, similar to a cast iron skillet. Once seasoned, food will never stick to the cooking surface. This dish may cost you 30 bucks or so new, but it will last a lifetime and it has many multiple uses for baking, and the dish can be microwaved or even put in the freezer.

Once I seasoned our stoneware pan, never have I had any issue with anything sticking to it. Truth be told, it is the most non-stick cooking surface I own. This Clay stoneware is truly amazing and worth every penny! (Ok, it was a gift, but I love it!)

The Dough
There are many variations on pizza dough and you can surf the Internet to find what you like best, however when it came to the dough I wanted it to be as authentic as possible. Problem is, these Chicago pizzerias don’t exactly give out their recipes. Here I did a LOT of research and found what I believe to be the closest to the original as I could find, it is fantastic and is supposed to be similar dough from Pizzeria Uno. Jeff Smith from the Frugal Gourmet TV Show had put his time and effort into figuring out the recipe from Pizzeria Uno and took it to the restaurant for the 30-year veteran pizza maker “Mama” to sample. He was told, “it can’t get any closer”. So, this is the recipe I use, it is simple, but really good. This recipe will also cause your home to smell like a pizzeria real fast!

* 2 packages rapid rise dry yeast
* 2 cups warm water
* 1/2 cup vegetable oil
* 4 tablespoons olive oil
* 1/2 cup cornmeal
* 5 1/2 cups flour

Dissolve the yeast in the water. Add the vegetable oil, olive oil, cornmeal, and half of the flour. Beat for 10 minutes. Then mix in the remaining flour. Knead for several minutes afterwards on granite countertop mixing in flour lightly. The dough should not really be sticky at all.
Remove dough and place on a clean countertop or bowl. Cover and allow to rise in warm place until double in bulk. Punch down and allow to rise again. Punch down a second time and you are ready.

**It should take an hour or so for the first rise, then another hour for the second as long as the dough is in a warm place.
If you have left over dough, vacuum seal it and freeze for later use.

NOTE: This dough recipe is enough to make two 9 inch square pan pizzas, and have enough left over for a 10 inch snack pizza.
VARIATION: add one-teaspoon salt, teaspoon of sugar. Some folks like even a little Italian seasoning in the crust, so just ad some to the dough

Filling
When we go to the trouble to make home made deep-dish pizza, a simple cheese pie is not going to cut it. Ours is this combination: Italian sausage, hamburger, pepperoni, Canadian bacon, hickory smoked bacon, mushroom, onion, Spinach, sliced tomato and green pepper.
Take your hamburger and sausage and cook them together in a cast iron skillet then drain off the fat. Next, lightly cook the Canadian bacon until it is golden brown then set aside. Next cook your bacon, drain the fat, and set the bacon aside. Wipe the skillet and lightly sauté the veggies until they are tender, then set aside.
This is probably the biggest difference between Jims Deep Dish, and authentic Chicago deep dish Pizza. Some of the Chicago pizzerias use raw sausage right in the pie and all the grease stays in the pie. I find it a much better pie to precook the meats and drain the fat. It is healthier, and the pie is saucy enough as it is, it does not need the extra grease.

Sauce
Sauce is a bit a matter of preference. There are some restaurants that actually just pour the tomatoes right from the can with little seasoning and away you go. This is good, however I prefer a cooked sauce. Here is what you will need.

One large can tomato sauce
Olive oil
Fresh chopped Garlic
One Caned tomatoes cut (San Marzanos)
Crushed red peppers
Brown Sugar teaspoon
Some onion salt
Dash Oregano
Dash Parsley
Chopped Basil
Dash of thyme
salt 1\2 teaspoon
1\2 teaspoon red wine vinegar
* Use fresh ingredients if possible.

First heat olive oil is saucepan then sauté the garlic. Next, just add everything and simmer with a closed lid for at least 35 minutes. Let cool to room temperature with the lid on. Lastly, store in a GLASS jar and keep in the fridge 24 hours before serving. NOTE: The red wine vinegar helps give the sauce a bit of zing or tang which works very well, but optional.

Assembling the Pie
Grease your stoneware dish with olive oil up to and around the sides. Place your dough in the center of the dish and push \ work outwards towards the side of the pan. Pull the dough up the sides of the dish. The crust on the bottom should be fairly thin. The crust on the sides should be also. Make sure that the inside bottom corners of the pan do not stack up with dough. Keep pushing the excess dough out of the corners and up and over the sides of the pan. Deep Dish should NOT be an extremely thick crust, actually quite thin everywhere. You don’t want to end up with a loaf of bread with sauce on it!

Next, place your cheese on top of the dough, and then add all of your pre-cooked meats on top of the cheese. Next up, add your veggies.

Finally, pour your sauce on top and garnish with Parnassian Cheese. I like to also put some fresh basil on top of the sauce just because I love basil! Never get enough. You should see the size of my basil bush, huge!

Cooking
Preheat to 455 and cook for 40-50 minutes. Place pie on the bottom of the rack. If the crust is getting to brown on top just use some aluminum foil at the end to cover. (Usually not necessary) When done, let stand for five minutes or longer then serve.

This recipe is based on the authentic Chicago style Deep Dish Pizza, with very little variation. Basically, we just drain the fat off the precooked meats and also like to use a lot of basil, oregano, and parsley. As far as the sauce, we like it either pre cooked, or not. Our preference is to precook and let the sauce sit over night in a glass jar in the fridge.

Making a deep dish pizza is a little bit like making a Lasagna, you can pretty much make it anyway you want, and as many layers as you want. Stuffed pizzas are popular however a deep-dish pizza has enough dough already. To protect my six-pac abs, one layer of dough is enough for me!!!

Other Tips

***I cook plenty of all the fillings because I know I will have enough left over dough to make one, or even two more pies. We take several vacuum seal bags and pack the dough separately, then the meats and veggies, even vacuum seal the sauce. Wrap tape around all the packages and through them in the freezer. Then we have awesome home made pizza ready to go, just thaw and assemble. All ingredients hold up great in the freezer properly sealed.

***When working the dough up the sides of the pan, keep pulling the dough until it goes over the side. Then after all the fillings are in, cut with a knife about one inch down the outside of the pan. Then turn the edges upward in a swirl pattern. Makes a great presentation

***Brush the top of the crust with a mix of olive oil, garlic, and your fav Italian seasonings.

***A small amount of Ricotta Cheese on top of the Motz layer is good as well. Other GREAT fillers are spinach and a few anchovies. Again, what ever you like, put it in. Just pre cook and drain your meats so the pie is less fat, less filling, taste better, and will maintain a crunchier crust. Pre cooking the filling also will make your pie less watery and firmer. If you use fresh tomatoes for a filling under the sauce, be sure to take out all the seeds and slices should be very thin.

That’s It!! One more thing, leftovers are da bomb!

Go Green And Save Green!! Catch Fish To!!!

By now most of our viewers know that we have just gotten terrific results from our new Go Green Fishing Machine. Most of our trips out of Hampton Virginia we spend around from $2-$4 bucks in gas, that is it!!! Plus, we fill our coolers up with fish. Thanks to the Carolina Skiff JVX 20 and Suzuki 90hp four stroke, we can fish more efficient and greatly reduce emissions at the same time.

Now here in Virginia, we have suffered a BIG cold snap over the last few weeks, however the ice on the Hampton River has finally melted and we are enjoying a nice 63 degree day. And yes, I will be takin advantage of this weather and going on one of my favorite eco friendly bike tours today along the waterside of the Chesapeake Bay. During the winter months it is not always advantageous for us to head out in freezing weather in an open sea to go fishing. I recommend that you folks do what we do, Go Green and jump on a head boat!!! One boat heading offshore taking a bunch of folks makes a lot of sense this time of year. A fun day on the water, plenty of fish for everyone, and only burning one engine to take an entire boat load of folks.

Frostbite Challenge Results

JBO TV ventured out on Friday for day one of the Frostbite Challenge. We boarded one AWESOME boat , captain, and crew, Captain Dave Wessner on board the Billable Ours.

A great fishing team, however the first day the Rockfishing in legal waters was almost non existent. When the fish move offshore due to water temps and bait, there is not much one can do except cover a lot of water up and down the beach just trying to find anything! That is what we did, without a lot of luck. Most of the boats the first day did not land fish.

Things did turn around somewhat on day two, and there was quite a respectable weigh in. Thanks to Don and everyone for putting on such a great tourney event. Looking forward to next year!

Frostbite Challenge. ROCK ON!

THIS WEEKEND!!! JBO TV will be heading out with Captain Dave Wessner early morning Friday for the first day of the Frostbite Challenge! We will be filming a segment for JBO TV and reporting here on the JBO BLOG and Web site on the conditions and catch. The water temps have been way cold here off our Virginia Coast. Most boats have been heading south to NC to find a few degrees warmer water. Hopefully these slightly better temps this week will cause the fish to feed closer to our Virginia waters and within the three mile limit.

TITLE: Winter Time Boat Reminders

There are almost an infinite number of topics to discuss when it comes to preparing your boat for winter, weather your boat is in the water, sitting on a trailer, or even in boat storage. We will not attempt to cover it all her in 800 words or less, but just cover some of the things that we do, and see every year.

First, probably the most frequent problem I have had during the winter is fresh water lines cracking and breaking. This has happened about every year or so. The solution is a simple one. Drain all the water out of your tank and fill your lines with the proper antifreeze solution available at marine stores. This will do the trick and create one less chore you will have to do in springtime. Of course keeping some heat on your boat is a good idea as well. For years now we have been using oil filled electric radiant heaters to put a nice heat throughout our boat that is kept in the water. These are safe heaters and do not cost that much to run. We have also put light bulbs in the engine compartment when it gets really cold and run the de humidifier on the central air system when not on the boat. Trying to heat the boat with on board central air is a waste of money when not on your vessel, also if the water drops below 40 degrees, your central air unit will not be blowing warm air anyway. When it gets really cold on the 36 Trojan, I use the radiant electric heater and a small electric marine safe heater up in the bow that is on a thermostat. Cooking in the galley, or using a small propane heater buddy for supplemental heat works well while on board. Never leave a gas heater unattended! One other good tip when your on board and the temps are in the teens and the wind is gusting 30 knots plus,,, Do what I do!!!-- Long Johns, a friend’s house, or hotel room!

The Go Green Fishing Machine is a JVX Carolina Skiff with a new 90HP Suzuki Four Stroke. This boat of course can go on a trailer, boat storage, or even stay in the water over the winter. Right now, she is in the water because of Rockfishing. This rig is a single engine with a single battery, self-bailing scuppers, and a good bilge pump with an automatic switch. What we make sure of while the boat is out in the cold is to run the boat \ engine enough to keep the batteries up. The cold weather can suck a battery down fast, then out goes your bilge pump. So to keep it simple, I make sure our scuppers are free and clear of any debris, and the battery is kept at full charge. With all the rain we have had over the fall, it is necessary to keep an eye on your boat weather it is on land or in the water. Many boats have been seriously damaged by clogged scuppers and rainwater filling the boat. This is an easy fix, simply check on your boat once in a while.

If your boat is kept in dry storage, make sure it is inside. If your boat is going to be kept on a lot, be sure you can easily access it to make sure your bats are up and scuppers are clear.
This is also a good time to grease your bearing buddies on your trailer and oil up whatever needs be. After a trailer sits all winter, getting it to re lock on your trailer ball sometimes can be a challenge. A little bit of simple maintenance can prevent a lot of cussing when you go to hook up your boat in the spring.

Jan-April is a great time to haul your boat for annual mainteance. Bottom paint, wax, all those projects that you have written down during the summer can now get done at the boat yard. Here in Hampton we have hauled out several times at Sunset Boating Center and Bluewater. I cant say enough good things about both places. Bluewater has done a lot of work on our 36 Trojan as well as the Go Green Fishing Machine. Just give them a ring for anything you may need done to your boat over the winter. Sunset is a dry storage facility and is a wonderful place to keep your boat plus they have a very good fish cleaning station right on sight.

One of the biggest causes for boat damage during the winter is simply, neglect. Keeping a close eye on your boat weather on land or sea is the best thing you can do to prevent damage. If you cannot visit your boat for any reason, hook up with a buddy who is nearby to give your vessel a looksey once in a while. Here at JBO Central, we walk the docks almost every day to check on everyone’s boats. Just yesterday I stood by one center console and pumped water out of her for over an hour. Had no idea where the owner was, but at least his boat did not go down. Believe me, there is no more of a sinking feeling than approaching your dock and only seeing the top of your tuna tower hovering just over the surface of the water. I get chills just writing those words!!

What we will do for the Go Green Fishing Machine during Feb-March, is haul the boat out of the water, pressure wash and of course flush the Suzuki engine with fresh water. For winter storage, be sure to leave the lower unit in the down trim position so all water drains out of the lower unit. We will also keep a trickle charge on the battery and make sure the scuppers are clear of any debris.

Fishing here out of Hampton we are very lucky and pretty much have a year round fishery so that means a lot of us use our boats year round. This I like! I no longer live aboard my 36 Trojan, however some of the winters I have spent on her have been some of the most memorable in my life. I usually could keep warm on the boat even during our harshest winter, however getting off the boat and walking the dock, that is a different story!

JBO TV was there early today at the weigh in at Rudee Inlet to catch the first boats coming in to weigh their catch.
Reports were mostly down south, that seemed to be where the bite was. Over 160 teams are fishing this event with over a $200,000 pay out. Tomorrow and Saturday should prove very interesting for sure!

JBO TV would like to wish everyone a great New Year! 2009 was a bit of a Hallmark year for JBO TV. This year was our 20th anniversary of broadcasting and our first season to launch the new Go Green Fishing Machine. Thanks to Suzuki and Carolina Skiff, we have put a boat and motor package that not only is good for the environment, but also easy on the wallet. We have never been so excited about one of our show boats, this rig is truly amazing and we look forward to featuring the boat during 2010.
I thought that this boat and motor package would be extremely efficient, but was still surprised at just how little it coast to run this boat. In our early marketing and promotion of the Go Green Fishing Machine, we used the slogan, "Fish all day for under 20 bucks". Now that we have been filming with the boat and checking fuel consumption on all of our trips, we have changed our slogan to- "Ya got two bucks? Lets go fishin!"

This is so true, many of our trips we spent anywhere from two dollars to five dollars in gas, and fill the cooler up with fish. Now that is AMAZING! This upcoming trade show season, be sure to check out the new line of Suzuki Four Stroke power plants. The Suzuki 90hp is the one that we are running on the new JVX Carolina Skiff with smart tabs. Check your Carolina Skiff and Suzuki dealers for more info. JBO TV is planning on making some trade show appearances with the Go Green Fishing Machine and will post the dates and info here once we have booked everything.

21 years of broadcasting and Hampton's 400th anniversary.
2010 will mark JBO TV 21st year of broadcasting. WOW! Seems like yesterday when I first saw our show air on the FOX affiliate in Richmond Va. Back then we started out as Fishing Virginia, and soon syndicated across the state of VA. It sure has been an interesting 21 years. Mostly the changes in technology have kept us on an ever changing production curve. The people I have met throughout the last 21 years has been the best part of this entire experience. I still get a kick when someone tells me they have planned their family vacation based on a JBO TV show. That is really cool.

2010 also marks Hampton Virginia's 400th anniversary. There is gonna be a lot of events that you are not going to want to miss going on in Hampton during 2010. We will be posting info here on the site, and filming many activities for the program as well. Stay Tuned!!

Tina Turner is Back!!
During the holidays, Ben Baugh flew back from Washington State and brought back our show mascot, Tina Turner Baugh. Tina is now 10 years old and has been appearing on our show since she was a pup. Now Tina is back at JBO Central, and is already chasing Ducks and Sea Gulls. I have trained her to grab Croaker off the boat deck and through them in the cooler. I am looking forward to having my four legged first mate back to help me fish. Loads of fun!

Bluewater Rockfish Tourney in Hampton TODAY!!

I just left Bluewater in Hampton with only 30 minutes left in the weigh in. Some NICE fish were being weighed in and so far one over 41 pounds is in the lead. The crowed was good and Bluewater is hosting a pig picken for the tournament party. We will post final results later, for now,
