Jim's Birthday Bash, 47 and climbing! Cruising on board the Ms Hampton 2

This past year has been one wild ride to say the least. Just to name a few things that have gone on during my 46th year: Sold my house in Richmond, moved into storage, lived on a boat while purchasing and renovating our new waterfront pad in Hampton, moved the studio, set up the studio, took my daughter to college, picked up my daughter from college at the end of the year, my son Ben graduated college and is leaving to Washington State for his masters, produced many video projects besides our JBO series and to cap it off, a trip to Miami and West Palm, then another trip to Key Largo to shoot the Suzuki 09 product launch. And least ye forget, filming production for the 20th year anniversary of JBO has been going on throughout. So, as one can imagine, this has been one full year. SOOOOO! For my birthday, we kind of blew it out a bit!
First up, we did a party on the Ms Hampton 2 tour boat Friday night, we had well over 100 people on board for one great cruise. We left around 8pm and cruised over to see the Navy ships in Norfolk. We had everything on board, a great DJ, Beer and Wine, and a boat load of food. I would like to thank Pete and Susanne for putting on such a great show!!! Lots of fun.

My Favorite Birthday Present
This one was just to funny, and a very thoughtful gift. Artiest Mary McEwan painted an oil painting of you guessed it, our show mascot and my dog, Tina Turner Baugh. This painting really looks just like Tina, and ever since we hung her picture up in the condo, Tina just cant stop looking at herself. She just wont leave the hallway!

Virginia Crab dip VS
Maryland Crab dip.
Yesterday we decided to have a birthday competition on which was the better crab dip. The complete recipes will be in future editions of Virginia Travels Magazine, so look for their release. Basically here is the deal, for the VA crab dip, you make a basic New Orleans roue, after that is done, add some Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, parsley, and two pounds of fresh crab meat. Top it off with some fresh buttered bread crumbs. Bake for 30 min at 350. Just awesome.
The Maryland style was very different and quite cheesy/ Very good. This dish contained sour cream, cream cheese, cheddar cheese, crab meat, lemon and garlic. This mix was chilled and let set before cooking at 350 for about 30 minutes. Both were just fantastic. Both were also very different. Today, we are going to mix both together, and linguine and white wine, and have a crab pasta dish that will knock your socks off!!
Well, with all this cooking, we have run out of food, so we will hit the water today in search of the big Croaker. Flounder season is off right now, so Croaker and Trout are on our hit list. We are also trying to still get offshore this week based on weather. Have a great day!

Jim Baugh Outdoors NEW cooking set for 2009 Program Series

To help celebrate our 20th year in television, Jim Baugh Outdoors TV has just completed it's final additions to the shows new cooking set. This is where many of the cooking features will be filmed along the Hampton River for our 2009 series. Ever since we started as Fishing Virginia Television Series 20 years ago, our cooking segments have always been a favorite. We have shot many of on location features at restaurants from Florida to Maryland. Many of our older programs that featured our family recipes were shot on location at my fathers house on the river. Dad had an awesome kitchen that was set up perfect for filming. Taking a lot from what I learned about his set up, and many other professional chefs from all over, I designed our new cooking set to be able to handle the most demanding cooks!
We like to catch um, them cook um up quick. So this kitchen is complete with a double oven, (one is convection,) Microwave, commercial grade refidge, and to help clean up our large messes, two drawer style dish washers. Everything is stainless steel and the floors are hardwood.

CUSTOM TILE WITH RICK BOGERT MARINE ART
When I was at last years Annapolis show promoting the Hampton VA Booth, I met up with world renowned maritime artiest Rick Bogert for a tour of some of his latest works. I had seen these custom tiles where he would print in amazing color some of his artwork. I thought then, this would be an awesome addition for the new cooking set. A tiled backsplash with Rich Bogert art!! This would be the last addition to the otherwise "Dream Team" kitchen! So, once the tiles came in, I contacted Jack Hall of Jacks Tile to come in and put it all together. This was very exciting. All the art tiles are custom lit under the cabinets that just has an amazing look.
For more info on Rick Bogert Fine Art click the link below. "See ya in Annapolis Rick!!"
Be sure to also check out Ricks' custom offshore Rods. Unreall!!

Time to cook

First up on Friday, we cooked up some awesome Tuna, blackened and also made some sesame Tuna on the grill. It was fantastic. Next, we put our steamers to the test!!! I had caught some crabs off our dock and went to Armstead Seafood for the fresh Clams and fresh Shrimp. Also cooked up some Sausage and it all made one great presentation. Look for the recipe for Jim's Seafood Sampler in the Nov-Dec issue of Travel Virginia Magazine 2008.

Moving Fronts. We have had a mess with the weather, trying to get offshore has been tough this week, so we will be trying hard to get out next week and get on the Dolphin and Tuna bite. All filming we are producing now will be aired in 2009 for our 20th year broadcast. So far the fishing has been pretty good, but pickin that perfect offshore day has not been easy. Stay tuned for more offshore reports next week.

Fishing Just West of Tropical Storm Cristobal

Captain Earl Williams joined me on the docks on the Hampton River to try a little bottom bouncing along the Hampton Bar. We knew that tropical storm Cristobal was just offshore, and this low might really turn on the Croaker. The Croaker bite was excellent further up the James around the concrete ships, but with the dark clouds looming, we were not going to risk it. This our first trip out since putting on the new canvas and our mascot, Tina Turner Baugh was anxious to do a little fishing. Tina now can catch Croaker off the floor of the boat, and put them in the livewell. Not bad at all. Depending on what the storm did, we were either going to try and catch some bigger fish, or use the smaller ones for bait. What we thought was going to possibly be a great Croaker catch, turned into just a LOT of small fish. They were fun to catch, however as soon as this storm moves on, we will be heading up the James to see where the big ones are at. Todays trip we left out of the Hampton River, fished the HRBT, and all along the Hampton Bar. When we were not running to a fishing spot, we left the engines on idle. All day total we burned about two gallons of gas, and that is running both Suzuki 250 HP four strokes. I think we spent on gas and squid, less than 20 bucks to fish most of the day.

Croaker are plentiful in our area and do taste good fried up. I was glad to see that today's catch also included some Spot. A cooler full of Spot and Croaker will make any frying pan happy.

Next trip--FLOUNDER

JBO Show Boat gets new Canvas!!

It was about time! We had put on custom canvas by Cooks Canvas in Hampton five years ago and we have put that canvas through a lot of beatings, including Hurricanes. We have since named Phill Cook, "Cook's Cat 2 Canvas". He does a great job and has out fitted every one of our boats including the 36 Trojan.

We went with a matching blue to match up with our sponsors logo's, and the old white was hard to really keep clean. The boat looks awesome and is ready to fish out of it's new home on the Hampton River. We should have a bottom fishing report this weekend, we are trying to fry up a bunch of fresh Croaker to go with the bushel of crabs. Great combination!

See ya on the Water in Hampton!

Fireworks on the Fourth of July over the Chesapeake Bay-A Must See!

Hi everyone. JB here wishing everyone a great fourth of July holiday. We had an awesome view right of off our balcony of the Hampton\Fort Monroe fireworks show. This was a real treat, and everyone one had a ball cooking on the waterfront barbie while this spectacular fireworks show was booming Right in front of us. Hampton has a lot of fireworks through the summer season. Blackbeard Festival and Bay Days have awesome fireworks shows as well. If you have not had the pleasure of watching a fantastic fireworks show over the water, you need to come to Hampton an experience this, great fun for the entire family. For festival dates and more info just log on to http://www.hamptoncvb.com/

In the top picture, you can see the Hampton Suzuki Show boat is back in the water after about a two month haul out. We had a lot of work done at Sunset Boating Center, many thanks to Cindy and John. (and the new baby of course) The Hot Pursuit got a solid bottom job, worked on the radar, changed the oil in the Suzuki 250's, put in new impellars, and also worked on the AC filters. IN addition, one great cleaning job. She is running great and looking forward to fishing offshore once some good reports start coming in. We got the show boat splashed just in time or the fourth.
WEEKEND OFF

Well, at JBO central we are taking the weekend off, and will be cruising over to Salt Ponds on the Bay in Hampton. Here at the clubhouse and pool, they had a great holiday pool party and the grill never stopped.
"Spirit of America Festival" (in Phoebus)
I got a call and just found out there is a Mustang car show being held in Phoebus right around the corner. Vette owers are welcomed. This car show is a part of the "Spirit of America Festival" -So-coffee and car show it is, then we will fire up the twin 250's, and hit the water. Might even set out a crab pot today, we are getting some nice Jimmies in the river now. They are all over my dock! Tina Turner got into a bit of a tizzy with a crab this morning. Tina got reminded that those things have claws. Only thing hurt was her ego.
Sunday concert on the beach at Buckroe
Sunday we hope to see everyone on the Beach at Buckroe for the Sunday afternoon Beach music party. We will be there rolling some tape for Jim Baugh Outdoors and enjoying the concert. Weather looks great! Yall come on out!
Wishin everyone a happy fourth from JB and Tina!!

Rollin, Rollin down the river! -GO BEN BAUGH!!

Credance clearwater sure made a big hit with rollin down the river (Proud Mary). One of my favorite tunes and things to do. I started white water canoeing back at about 10 years of age, and my kids have been rafting with us during the last 20 year of producing Jim Baugh Outrdoors TV.

My son Ben Baugh really has taken a shine to white water, and had to give up a river guide job for a real internship before heading out to Washington State for his masters degree. He is now grabbing every chance he can to learn new tricks and explore the adventure of white water kayaking.
Was not long after Ben got back from our Suzuki West Palm Beach\Key Largo shoot, before he was back in his Kayak heading for the river.

These pictures are of Ben doing a complete roll in class three White water.

These photos are of Cucumber Rapid on the upper section of the Lower Youghiogheny River. This section is called "The Loop" in Ohiopyle State Park, Pennsylvania. It's called the loop because its a big river meander so by the time you're at the take-out, you're still only a short walk back to the put-in, allowing for boaters to take multiple "loops" in a day without having to set shuttle. It's a class III river.

Hampton Blackbeard Festival 2008

We were not back from the Suzuki 2009 product launch in Key Largo before we saw the skyline filled with old sails, and a lot of thirsty Pirates! The 2008 Hampton Blackbeard Festival was held this past weekend in downtown Hampton, and what a festival it was! These Pirates really put on a show with around the clock Piratical entertainment. This is a must see event that caters to families young and old.

This year Jim Baugh Outoors did something a little different at the Blackbeard Festival, we filmed the Pirate camp and featured "Cookie", the Pirate camp cook. Everything fixed was authentic to the time period of Blackbeard, all cooked over an open flame. The food was fantastic and old Cookie really knew his stuff.

Look in the July-August issue Jim Baugh column of Travel Virginia Magazine for the complete story and recipes. Below is a link to our current column in Travel Virginia Magazine and E Magazine, Destinations.

West Palm Beach SKA 440 Roundup-Suzuki Team Special \ Captain Ron Mitchell

Hello everyone! The Jim Baugh Outdoors TV Crew has traveled to West Palm Beach to showcase Suzuki fishing team, 2006 SKA Angler of the year, Captain Ron Mitchell. Captain Ron has an awesome 33 Contender rigged with trips, (Three Suzuki 300 HP Four Strokes.) We left out of Lake Park Marina early for an exciting two day SKA tournament event. The fishing was very hot, heavy action from the start. We were catching fish in the 20 pound class, but it would take close to a 50 pounder to win this event. The variety of fish was of course interesting to us, but the crew were out to hunt down the big King. I did see what might of won the tourney, a HUGE King swam right under the boat while we had a Cobia right at the boat, along with two other Cobia following the one hooked. A lot of excitement in the water for sure. Many times we would have doubles on, and fortunately only had a few Bonita the entire day. Hats off to Captain Ron, Captain Nick, and first mate Will for being such a top notch fishing team. This group really worked well together, and the boat was loaded to the hilt. From the 900 Suzuki HP to even the three mounted cameras on the boat, everything was rigged to perfection. This type of fishing is very exciting. Offshore fishing boats that look a lot more what Crocket and Tubs would drive, than your average fishing boat. These are high performance boats rigged with the latest and best gear on the water. This type of fishing rigged, paired with a great fishing team, puts a LOT of fish in the boat. Thanks again to Captain Ron and the Bandit Fishing Team for letting us join in one great day of tournament fishing. Captain Ron's web site is http://www.banditfishingteam.com/ Next up on our trip south, my son Ben and I will be heading to Key Largo for a Suzuki Product demonstration. We will have plenty of more info. on all the latest Suzuki products announced soon after our return. Next Week after our Key Largo Shoot, I will put Ben on a plane in Miami and he will head back to Hampton then back to West VA for his summer internship. Then Ben will be off to Washington State to Western Washington University for his masters in Geology. It has Been great to have Ben along for the first part of our Southern Florida Shoot. Thanks for all the help Son! All the footage we are shooting along with the 2008 Miami International Boat Show Special will be post produced and featured as a Jim Baugh Outdoors TV show that will air on the Sportsman Channel coming up in June. Stay Tuned.
