Nasty Noreaster

Yesterday was quite the day. I had jumped in the truck and went to check the Trojan at Customs House Marina, and also our Suzuki\Hampton Show Boat to prepare for strong winds and one mean tide. The rain was something, pounding!! After securing everything, I headed to Buckroe Beach to try and get some shots of the storm. It did not take long before the streets were flooded, and felt it was high time to return to JBO Central. So, that is what I did, parked the truck, and started checking things out around our docks making sure everything was secure.

Then I decided to jump on my trusty JBO three speed beach cruiser with my waterproof Pelican case, and see just how flooded the waterfront area was. To my surprise, the old beach cruiser did rather well in the water, at one point, I may have been in three feet or so. I never stopped peddling, and got threw most of the water alright.

The storm and wind hit at high tide, so things did get a bit flooded. This morning all was returned to normal, just in time for the Neptune Festival at Virginia Beach!!

Farewell to a friend, Dennis Nate

We lost a good man this past week. Dennis Nate passed away at 55 years of age on Thursday Sept 18th. He is survived by his daughter, Margaret "Maggie" Grace Nate of Yorktown; a sister, Catherine Driscoll and her husband, Daniel, of Newport News; two brothers, Daniel G. Nate and his wife, Barbara, of Woodberry Heights, N.J., and David F. Nate and his wife, Teresa, of Wenonah, N.J. Also survived by several nieces and nephews and friends.

I knew Dennis before he was the Dockmaster at the Riverwalk in Yorktown Virginia. Dennis did a lot of work in downtown Hampton working with events and help me put on the Get Hooked On Hampton Rockfish Tourney. Dennis also had a great voice, and I recorded his voice overs for several TV ads on our Trojan production vessel. Dennis was also a welcome sight for a long time as he worked the popular Sunday night crowed behind the bar at Maker 20 while David Carter entertained. Dennis could serve up a mean cocktail, but Dennis never touched a drop at any time during the years that I knew him.

Dennis was just a great guy who was liked by everyone, and he was doing a great job in Yorktown at the riverwalk. All those new docks under the bridge in Yorktown with all the shops, restaurants, and festivities- Dennis helped make it all happen. He was more than just a Dockmaster. He was great at putting on events, and had been doing it for a long while. Dennis was largely responsible for bringing to Yorktown such popular historical ships as the Kalmar Nyckel

So long Dennis, Hampton and Yorktown Virginia won't be the same without ya! You will be truly missed.

Washington State- Ben Baughs Trek Across the USA

Hello everyone!
My son Ben Baugh and Tina Turner Baugh gathered up their belongings and jam packed the Bambler (Ben's Jeep) to make their way across the USA.

Washington State is where Ben will be studying for his Masters Degree in Geology. Ben also took along his good friend Eric to help with the drive, leaving from Hampton, then Richmond, then West Virginia, the Bambler crew first headed to Chicago. When Ben called me from Chicago, the first thing I ask him was if he had yet to try the deep dish pizza. He said it was the first thing he tried when he arrived. FANTASTIC! Bens sister Casey, who is starting her sophmore year in college, and I are BIG Pizza fans!

The boys and Tina loved Chicago and stayed there several days. Continuing on their cross country journey took them to Denver Colorado, Utah, Portland, and of course, Washington State. (top two pictures) I was pretty floored when Ben sent me the pictures. The mountain ranges are just unreal.

I am very much looking forward to heading out there and fishing with Ben on the Puget Sound! We certainly will take the cameras and film our catch for sure.

Ben, Eric and Tina made it to the University safely, and they have been busy getting set up. Ben did all the planning for the cross country trip, and stayed with friends he knows pretty much the entire time. I don't think they stayed in a hotel even once.

Hatteras was never better-Bite is ON!!

Anyone who has been following Jim Baugh Outdoors TV over the years knows that one of our favorite stops is Hatteras Village. For years we have stayed at Hatteras Landing right where the ferries launch to go to Ocracoke NC. Only yesterday I got back from what may be one of our most productive, and interesting offshore trips we have ever filmed. Just look at this haul, around 600 pounds of fish!! Dolphin, Triggers, Grouper, and even nice Hoo!! We climbed abord the Petral 2 with captain Brian and also his first mate Brian. Two Brians on the boat, one captain and one mate, made it easy to keep the names straight. We had a great crew on board, captain Earl Williams came down from Roanoke Virginia to head out with us. We also had several folks from Dirty Dicks seafood restaurant who really put a hurtin on the fish. These guys were great fisherman and had some awesome electric reels. We were fishing in 170 + water, so those electrics really came in handy. One of Dirty Dicks Chiefs was on board, Chief Kevin, and we all decided it would be a great idea to do a cooking segment at Dirty Dicks after our offshore shoot. Chief Kevin had an awesome marinade for the Trigger and Hoo that really turned out fantastic. The cooking segment went great and we will not only feature the recipe on our show, but also in Travel Virginia magazine as well. This was just an unreal day, which sort of started out a bit slow. I certainly had no idea how this shoot would would end up. Basically the bottom bite did start off slow. We could get on them, but for only a short while before we drifted out of the target zone. After a lot of drifts, we did manage to put quite a few Triggers in the boat. We also were catching Dolphin off of the bow and stern. As the Dolphin bite picked up, the captain then started trolling for Dolphin, and the hook up was instant. Once a fish was one, we were bailing dolphin non stop for hours. After the massive bailing session, Captain Brian trolled on the way back to Hatteras for Hoo. First mate Brian did an awesome job all day working the lines, one of the best mate\captains I have seen. He kept our lines in the water, even about ten at a time- bailing Dolphin, this is not an easy trick. The first Hoo hook up was about a 25+ pounder, that unfortunately we lost at the stern. Big redemption with a second Hoo that we did get in the boat. Excellent gaffing, and that Hoo was put in the box pronto! I can not say enough good things about this charter. It is not expensive to go on, and the captain defiantly knows how to put you on a variety of offshore fish all in one day that makes for one action packed memorable event.
When you go to Hatteras Village, be sure to stop in Dirty Dicks for a bite of fresh seafood. It truly is a great resturant. We will be heading back there this Saturday for the Hatteras Chowder competition and day on the docks festival. See ya there!!

Corvetts at Carlisle PA- JBO was THERE!

Corvettes at Carlisle PA is the largest Corvette show in the world. This three day event takes place in the country side in beautiful Carlisle PA. If you are a fan of Vettes, this is the one show you do not want to miss. There was tons of things happening, one of which was the unavailing of the new 2009 Z06.

My favorite display was the gathering of the 1958 Corvettes, all under one great big yellow tent. These cars were just in immaculate shape, and some of the color combination I had never seen before. There was a Teal and White 58 that draw a lot of attention, I loved that one the best, a true American classic. Pretty much anything you wanted for a Vette, you could find at this show. Bondurant was there, and many booths were performing on site fabrication and installation of many aftermarket products. Some of the exhaust systems were quite a sight to see. "Installers Alley" was a hit for sure. You could buy an exhaust system right there and watch them install it. Special guest for this show included Tom Wallace, Vehicle Line Executive-Performance Cars: Tadge Juechter, Corvette Chief Engineer, and Dave McLellan, past Corvette Chief Engineer just to name a few.

On Friday, -The Corvette American Flag display. This is an American Flag made out of real live Corvettes (over150 Vetts). This display could be seen from land as well as air. It was quite a sight to see, and was displayed in the autocross area. We had the JBO Show Vette on display and after looking at so many Corvettes, it was time to jump in the C5 and hit the local mountains in PA. Heading south I ended up in Maryland, punched in wineries on the GPS and found nearby Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard.
Well, I had to stop for this, hopefully bring back some wine to Hampton. The winery was great and we ended up with a nice crowed in the sample tent outside and we all had a blast. The trip back cruising threw the hills of Mongomery County Maryland was a fantastic drive, and I made it back to Hampton in only about four hours.

We will get out this week and try to find the Flounder again, this holiday weekend I am heading to the mountains again to take my daughter Casey back to College, and my son Ben leaves tomorrow morning driving to Washington State. He has Tina Turner with him, we will post some updates on his cross country drive in his Jeep. Later this fall I will fly out to see him and do some fishing in the Puget sound. That will be a first for me, cant wait!!

Jim Baugh Outdoors Show Boat -Docked on the Hampton River

Cabo San Lucas Mexico Monster Bite! GO MIKE!

Jim Baugh Outdoors Veteran Angler and photographer Mike Wilburn headed to Cabo San Lucas to fish for monster Dolphin while we were fishing offshore from Hampton. Dolphin are also known as Dorado and Mahi Mahi. Mike did catch just a we bit bigger Dolphin than we did, and he was only two miles offshore! Mike's Dolphin catch was over six feet long and approx. seventy pounds. Great catch Mike! Only to be topped by Mike's 16 year old son Cabell Wilburn with a whopping 220 pound Blue Marlin! A 220 pound fish will certainly keep any young man busy and out of trouble for quite a while. Congrads to Cabell for a catch of a lifetime. The Marlin was caught on a brown and orange chugger and was landed in about 45 minutes. Also caught offshore this day was a 170 pound Yellowfin Tuna, a Striped Marlin, White Marlin and a Sailfish. Congratulations to Mike and his boys for such great catches. Seems like the offshore bite is pretty hot everywhere right now. This has been some of the best Dolphin fishing we have seen off our offshore waters in a long time! We will be heading out again next week from Hampton. Yall come get some!
