Happy New Years Everyone!!

JBO TV would like to wish everyone a great New Year! 2009 was a bit of a Hallmark year for JBO TV. This year was our 20th anniversary of broadcasting and our first season to launch the new Go Green Fishing Machine. Thanks to Suzuki and Carolina Skiff, we have put a boat and motor package that not only is good for the environment, but also easy on the wallet. We have never been so excited about one of our show boats, this rig is truly amazing and we look forward to featuring the boat during 2010.
I thought that this boat and motor package would be extremely efficient, but was still surprised at just how little it coast to run this boat. In our early marketing and promotion of the Go Green Fishing Machine, we used the slogan, "Fish all day for under 20 bucks". Now that we have been filming with the boat and checking fuel consumption on all of our trips, we have changed our slogan to- "Ya got two bucks? Lets go fishin!"

This is so true, many of our trips we spent anywhere from two dollars to five dollars in gas, and fill the cooler up with fish. Now that is AMAZING! This upcoming trade show season, be sure to check out the new line of Suzuki Four Stroke power plants. The Suzuki 90hp is the one that we are running on the new JVX Carolina Skiff with smart tabs. Check your Carolina Skiff and Suzuki dealers for more info. JBO TV is planning on making some trade show appearances with the Go Green Fishing Machine and will post the dates and info here once we have booked everything.

21 years of broadcasting and Hampton's 400th anniversary.
2010 will mark JBO TV 21st year of broadcasting. WOW! Seems like yesterday when I first saw our show air on the FOX affiliate in Richmond Va. Back then we started out as Fishing Virginia, and soon syndicated across the state of VA. It sure has been an interesting 21 years. Mostly the changes in technology have kept us on an ever changing production curve. The people I have met throughout the last 21 years has been the best part of this entire experience. I still get a kick when someone tells me they have planned their family vacation based on a JBO TV show. That is really cool.

2010 also marks Hampton Virginia's 400th anniversary. There is gonna be a lot of events that you are not going to want to miss going on in Hampton during 2010. We will be posting info here on the site, and filming many activities for the program as well. Stay Tuned!!
Tina Turner is Back!!
During the holidays, Ben Baugh flew back from Washington State and brought back our show mascot, Tina Turner Baugh. Tina is now 10 years old and has been appearing on our show since she was a pup. Now Tina is back at JBO Central, and is already chasing Ducks and Sea Gulls. I have trained her to grab Croaker off the boat deck and through them in the cooler. I am looking forward to having my four legged first mate back to help me fish. Loads of fun!
Happy New Years. Bring on 2010!
Here is a departing shot that was taken back in August during my 48th birthday. We had all gathered out at Salt Ponds in Hampton Virginia to toast me getting older. The restaurant at Salt Ponds is now open, and just a great place to go. Food is great and the view is fantastic!

Be safe, and have a great New Years!

Some Recent Fan Mail

Hey Jim,
Just wanted to take a moment to say thanks first of all for sharing info on a good fishing hole in this age of bragging reports that simply say "look at me" and give very little info that is useful.

Secondly, when we arrived on location yesterday and I was trying to figure out how to fish it without disturbing those who were already there, you invited us to fish right next to you.....again a rare event these days.

My dad is 83 and he always took me fishing as a kid so I do the same for him now. Spot are his favorite fish and having places to catch them that are in calm waters not too far from home is important. I try to get him out one or two times a year and yesterday's outing went well with him being able to take 15 keepers home for him and my mom.Take care and I'll see you on the water,

Joe Lavender

Jim,

You do a great job with that website.

Those fuel consumption figures are AMAZING!

Good luck,

Hi Jim,

I am back in the country for abit, glad to hear the bite is ON, I need to stop working so much growing fish, and get back to CATCHING fish!! GREAT to hear about the performance you are getting from the go green fishing machine. I have heard amazing things about properly balanced boat to motor ratios with Carolina Skiffs and the new smaller Suzuki 4-strokes. Looks like you matched it “spot on!” with the right balance. Good on you, now you can put the gas you save on the boat into your truck and come visit us in Ocean View J Hope to see you on the water soon if the wind slows, I’ll be the one burning gas in my old 2-stroke! Michael.
Kindest regards,
Michael

The $3.69 Rockfish Trip, Limited Out!
by Jim Baugh

The great thing about our new Go Green Fishing Machine is that we can now fish in places that our larger boat could not access. Fishing literally under the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel has provided some excellent early season rockfishing. The other great thing about this new boat is that even in a down economy, usually we can afford a fishing trip that cost under $4 bucks! Let’s see, with three people on board, average unit cost per person would be $1.23? Guess so! However folks, as the captain of the Go Green Fishing Machine, I did not ask for gas money. I covered the $3.69 in gas myself.

I did ask my cameraman at the beginning of the day if he would rather pay the fuel bill, or buy the cooking oil for frying the fish for dinner. He said, and I quote, “I will buy the cooking oil for sure”. Well, he spent more on peanut oil than I did in gas for the day. Hard to believe, but true!
We fished three days in a row last week at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel and we limited out on rockfish almost every trip. We were fishing the outgoing tide and wire lining the pilings in about 20 feet of water using bucktails with trailers. This is a sure fire way to put rockfish in the boat. All fish were in the 18 to 23 inch class.

December the larger fish will start to show up and live eeling is usually the ticket. We have caught rocks in the 20-pound class during the day simply drifting the eels over the HRBT. We do like the outgoing tide the best and be sure to use a strong leader fishing around the rocks. December is also a great time to be night fishing the HRBT. The fish will be larger and stacked up in the light line. Usually you can see the rockfish you want to catch, and simply cast to it. The fishing is that good. Try again, to catch the outgoing tide and fish the up current side of the pilings or bridge tunnel. Go Green Recipe \ Rock N Eggs.
Here is a great breakfast recipe that will use some of your leftover rockfish filets you had for dinner, that is, if there are any leftovers! Combine cooked flaked rockfish in a mixing bowl with one cup of cooked yellow rice. Add a teaspoon of chopped tomatoes and some crumbled cooked hot sausage. Add two chopped spring onions and cook in a small pan with a little olive oil and fresh garlic; then add to the mixing bowl. Stir it all up and pack the mixture into a four to five inch greased bowl. Next, season a cast iron skillet with a little bacon grease and heat. Then, firmly place the bowl with mixture upside down into the hot skillet so that the entire mixture holds shape. To finish, scoop out a small section in the middle, large enough to put in two eggs. Once the eggs are in, cover the dish and heat until the eggs are poached in the mixture. You can top off this dish with some hollandaise sauce or a bit of Texas Pete, or both. AWESOME BREAKFEAST!

Hampton Holiday First Light Celebration

Hampton History Museum.

Last night was all a glow at the Hampton History Museum for the first light celebration. The one man play was held outside in front of the museum and held everyone in the audience quite spellbound listing to the history threw living re-inactors with tales of Captain John Smith and the celebration of the first English Christmas in America.

The 'Kecoughtan Christmas' is the first recorded English Christmas in North America. In December of 1608, Captain John Smith recorded the events leading up to, during, and following their Christmas with the Native Americans. It was a hard second winter for the English settlers, and Smith sought trade with Chief Powhatan so that his people could survive. It was negotiated through messengers that if Chief Powhatan gave the settlers a boatload of corn, they would in turn build Chief Powhatan an English-style house, along with a grindstone, as well as numerous weapons, copper, and beads. While Smith knew he could not give the natives weapons, he sent word to the Chief agreeing on the trade constituents.
